Builders asked to upgrade skills on housing mgt



Professionals under the auspices of the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) have been advised to hone their skills in core area of housing management. Besides, members of the public and private clients were also enjoined to embrace use of construction methodology document duly prepared by registered builders for their construction works.

Speaking at a two-day Mandatory Continuous Professional Development Programme (MCPDP 2017) of the institute, President of NIOB, Tijjani Shuaib, noted that the use of construction methodology on building projects in Nigeria with its attendant advantages was not yet broad, hence the need for professionals to upgrade their expertise.

The forum took place in Lagos, Abuja, Katsina and Cross River States consecutively.

Themed: “Site Management Practices for Builders,” many resource persons noted that construction methodology had effects on project deliverables such as time, cost and quality, adding that different construction methodologies would lead to different project outcome. Registered builders were equally enjoined to prepare this critical document in all their building projects for all public and private entities.

Pioneer President of NIOB, Otunba Fatai Osikoya, reiterated the need for quick passage of the bill for the enforcement of the Nigerian National Building Code, while General Manager of Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Dotun Lasoju, an engineer, canvassed for increased value addition in rendering professional services.

In Katsina, Commissioner for Works, Tasi’u Dandagoro, an engineer, urged NIOB members to curb the menace of building collapse in the country by stamping out quackery. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works, Cross River State, Charles Eyong, advocated the adoption of builders’ documents for projects.

Other participants pointed out that avoidable fatalities, accidents, wastes and double-handling were effects of improper layout of sites during construction, calling on clients/contractors to ensure that construction site layouts is well defined and designed at the commencement of a building construction project by a registered builder.
