FG bans illegal checkpoints, levies of agro-produce on highway



The Federal Government has announced the banning of multiple levies and un-authorised checkpoints on the highways, especially those posing as local and state government agents to extort transporters of agricultural produce across the country.

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD), Dr. Bukar Hassan, said this while inaugurating an Inter- Agency Committee on the Enforcement of the ban and collection of levies/taxes on agricultural produce and agroallied products on the highway in Abuja.

He said that government was prepared to do everything possible to tackle challenges confronting the sector.

Hassan, who was represented by Mrs. Bunmi Shobowale, a senior official in FMARD, noted that the committee became necessary because of the continued violation of the order by state agencies and local government authorities who engaged private organisations to enforce multiple levies and un-authorised check points on the highway to obstruct transportation of agricultural produce in the country.
