NBTE approves new course in agriculture

In order to raise future farmers in the country and reduce unemployment through agriculture, the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has approved value chain courses for Diploma and Higher Diploma in Colleges of Agriculture in the country.

The Provost of Federal College of Agriculture, Akure (FECA), Dr Samson Adeola Odedina, disclosed this during the bi-monthly business forum in partnership with HarvestPlus Nigeria, at the institution’s campus.

He said the newly introduced value chain curriculum would bail the nation out of economic recession. Indeed, the inclusion of value chain activities of production, processing, value addition, marketing and consumption into the National Diploma and National Higher Diploma programmes in agricultural disciplines will maximise profits in the sector. Odedina said many young people did not want to go into agriculture because of the perception that the venture is not profitable.

But with the introduction of the new curriculum, which would soon be introduced into the University by the National University Commission (NUC) would change the perception. He said: “The NBTE approved the curriculum the college jointly facilitates with six other Nigerian institutions under our partnership with Switzerland Government Capacity Building for Agricultural Education (CBAEN) Project.”
