Pension: Edo plans meeting with union

Following the failure to pay pensioners their arrears of pensions, Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, is planning to meet with the leadership of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP), Edo State chapter as part of efforts to resolve issues that have been pitching the retirees against the state.

Disclosing this in Benin, the Head of Administration, Oredo Local Government Area, Mr Osagiator Ojo, said the decision was part of the outcome of the Joint Account and Allocation Committee (JAAC) meeting presided over by the governor.

According to him, the meeting with both local and state government pensioners in the state was necessary to correct the misinformation about pension payments by the administration.

He said: ‘’Government has observed with dismay the gross misinformation that has characterized the payment of pensions in the state. The governor therefore would wish to engage the union leadership or the pensioners both at the Local and State levels to ensure that this gross misinformation is dispelled and all issues arising to the controversies bothering on pension payments are amicably resolved.”

Ojo revealed that the 18 local government councils in the state jointly contributed N212.87 million in August towards the payment of pension in the state while they contributed N244.08 million in the month of September for the same purpose.

He said that total allocation accrued to the 18 LGAs in the month of September and shared in the month of October was N2.55 billion with N1.46 billion spent on mandatory expenditure.
