Afe Babalola advocates contributory funding for varsities

Founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado- Ekiti (ABUAD), Chief Afe Babalola SAN has advocated contributory funding of university education in the country with a view to producing world class universities in Nigeria. Babalola who spoke in during the second Founders’ day lecture of the Ondo State owned University of Medical Sciences, (UNIMED), Ondo expressed regret that none of the universities in the country was among the best 100 universities in the world.

In his lecture entitled “The Secrets in Founding,” Babalola said government alone cannot establish world Class University, saying all the World Class universities in the world were being funded by parents, philanthropists and foundations.

Babalola who had earlier before the lecture commended Chief Isaac F. Akintade for the donating a multi-million naira Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences building to the university, revealed that university education required massive funding. Akintade, who was a former Chairman of Oodua Group of Companies, donated the multi-million naira Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences building to UNIMED in order to boost medical tourism in the country.

In his remarks, Babalola told eminent Nigerians on the occasions that “I owe it a duty to let you all know that establishing a university is fraught with a cornucopia of challenges including its being an expensive and non-rewarding enterprise.”
