Controversies that rocked entertainment industry in 2017

The Nigerian entertainment industry was indeed a beehive of activities all through the year as interesting events cascaded down in large numbers both in the music and movie industry. The good, bad and ugly juicy tit bits about celebrities and their private lives were seen all over the media. Wizkid’s manager and Tekno
Few weeks back, the industry woke up to a fracas between Tekno and Wizkid’s manager, Sunday Are. Tekno, who is also known as Slim Daddy, had just finished performing at an event in Dubai went backstage and saw Wizkid’s camp and went over to greet them. He then stretched his arms to shake hands with Are, a move the elderly man took offence at and reacted by punching him. Both parties have since settled their rift.

AY, wife and Freda Francis cheating controversy
While 2017 has been a great year for one of Nigeria’s biggest comedian turned film maker, Ayo Makun better known as AY, it has also seen him experience his fair share of controversy. His wife, Mabel, publicly warned the CEO of Oasis Med Spa, Freda Francis, to stay away from her husband and family. Mabel then went on to share screenshots of a chat supposedly between Freda and AY.

P-square’s break up
2017 can be described as unfortunate for the group, Psquare as they finally went their separate ways after series of media outbursts between brothers, Peter and Paul and their elder brother, Jude few months ago. Presently, the twin brothers have gone solo in their careers with brand new singles to their credits.

Tonto Dike and Churchill divorce saga
The last few years have seen trail of controversies on the broken marriage between Nollywood actress, Tonto Dike and businessman, Churchill Olakunle. 2017 was not excluded as messy and dirtier details were released to the public why their two year union which produced their son, King Andrea collapsed. Just few months ago, Tonto threatened to sue her ex-husband.

Daddy Freeze on tithing
Ifedayo Olarinde also known as Daddy Freeze really knows how to break the internet with his controversial opinions. In 2017, Freeze trended from almost the beginning of the year till the end for all the right and wrong reasons. Daddy Freeze, who is not afraid to speak his mind especially when it comes to religion, in an interview, explained in details with scriptural backings why Christians are not obligated to pay tithes.

Seyi Shay’s epic fall and revealing clothes
Though she didn’t win big like Wizkid and Tiwa Savage, Seyi Shay was the centre of attention at this year’s All Africa Music Awards after falling on stage while performing her latest ‘Yolo Yolo’ song. The artist, who stormed the stage to put up an electrifying performance to spice up the event, had a great fall. The singer also steered another controversy when she recently stepped out with a strange man in a see-through dress showing off her butt.

Wizkid and Davido reconcile
Up until last week, two of Nigeria’s finest singers, Wizkid and Davido were involved in a long time beef which has made it very difficult for both act and their fans to see them together in a song. Just few days ago, the talented stars decided to call it quits when they both performed on stage together at Wizkid’s event in Lagos.

Caroline Ekanem, Davido over Tagbo’s death
This is one of the major controversies that rocked the Nigerian entertainment industry in 2017. Tagbo, the late boyfriend of Nollywood actress, Caroline Ekanem was said to have died of suffocation in the company of his friends, Davido and others. This situation saw Davido and Caroline throwing shades at each other on and offline. It was the talk of the town for a long time.

Banky W shares Adesua’s naked picture
2017 was a good one for newly married celebrity couple, Banky W and Adesua Etomi, as they were both in the news for the right and wrong reasons. First was the news of their engagement which took the industry by storm. Second was aftermath of the wedding which took place in far away, South Africa, when Banky W mistakenly shared the naked picture of his new wife on social media.

Dammy Krane’s fraud case in USA
Six months ago, precisely on June 2, Nigerian singer, Dammy Krane whose real names are Johnson-Hunga Oyindamola Emmanuel was arrested in Miami, USA, for grand theft, credit card and identity fraud. He was held at Dade County and subsequently granted bail set at $7,500. He was arrested alongside another Nigerian, Chukwuebuka. After several weeks of trial, a US court struck out the nine charges of credit card forgery, armed conspiracy and grand theft filed against the ‘My Dear’ crooner.

Harrysong and Kcee saga
Earlier in the year, Harrysong and his former label mates and business partners, Kcee and E-money were involved in a cold war which resulted to Kcee asking for the arrest of the Pop singer, Harrison Tare Okiri. Following Harrysong’s exist from Five Star Music; the label had accused the ‘Samankwe’ crooner of alleged breach of contract, fraud, among other issues.

Vector and MI
Nigerian hip-hop artist, Olanrewaju Ogunmefun, better known by his stage name Vector tha Viper and fellow rapper, Jude Abaga, known as MI doesn’t seem to be happy with the fact they are both in the same industry and doing same type of genre, Hip-hop. These two prolific rappers were the only Nigerian rappers who have been at longer heads for close to a year. The two have publicly and musically attacked themselves a number of times.

Burna Boy and 2kay
Singer and song writer, 2Kay was attacked by suspected robbers during an event which was organised by 2face. After thorough investigation, fellow Nigerian singer, Burnaboy was fingered to be behind the attack; a revelation that caused the police to declare him wanted for robbery. He was subsequently granted bail after he was charged to court and case has been adjourned.

Kemi Olunloyo and Seyi Law
Theirs was another controversy that saw both the self-acclaimed international journalist, Kemi and Nigerian stand-up comedian, Seyi Law, in a social media war. In July 2017, Seyi Law was involved in a horrid social media drama with controversial blogger, Kemi Olunloyo. The fiasco started when Olunloyo, in a post, alleged that Seyi Law’s daughter, Tiwaloluwa, is obese and diabetic.
