Expert: Subscribers should resist fraudulent deductions by telcos

A telecoms expert and Head of Electronic Top-Up of Globacom, Mr. Ben Akinseye, has challenged telecoms subscribers to always ask questions from their respective operators once they notice cases of fraudulent deductions in their voice or data subscription.

Akinseye, who spoke at a fourm in Lagos recently, said that inexplicable deductions by mobile network operators in the country can be tracked by subscribers.
Globacom, while addressing issues raised by subscribers of mobile network operators in the country who recently experienced ‘mysterious deductions’ from their service providers, said Nigerian laws give subscribers power to challenge such deductions.

He said: “I am talking from a position of knowledge, as a Nigerian, that for any kobo that is unjustifiably taken from your airtime or data account, you have the right under the law of Nigeria as enshrined in the Consumer Protection Council Act and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Act, 2003 to actually ask any network provider.

“If you subscribe for data and you are not pleased with the way your data was expended, you have the right also to ask. If you are a prepaid customer, you can call for your prepaid. If you are a postpaid customer, you are entitled to a document that itemises your bill. Whether you are a prepaid or postpaid customer, you also have a portal where you can actually log into and see your bills.”

Akinseye also explained that mobile industry is one of the most heavily regulated industries in the country, stressing the telecoms goes extra miles to protect the consumers in the industry.
“I can tell you for free that there are services that are subscription services and there is no service from any mobile network that I know of and with NCC that you cannot stop; to the extent of adverts. I am saying this as a matter of fact,” he said.
