Apostle Luke amazes us in Chapter 19 with the story of a very rich Custom Officer who climbed up a sycamore tree just to see the Lord as he passed by. It is one of the greatest acts of faith in the entire New Testament. The man was not just a rich Custom Officer; he was a Superintendent of Customs, a chief tax gatherer. Today, he would equivalent to a Comptroller of Customs. To say he is known to so many people in town would be stating the obvious. Yes he was. With all his social glory and status, this man did the unthinkable – climbed a tree in full public glare to catch a glimpse of another (seemingly ordinary) Jew as he passed.
“Then Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. Now behold, there was a man named Zaccheus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd for he was of short stature. So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was going to pass that way. And when Jesus came to that place, he looked up and said Zaccheus, make haste and come down for today I must stay at your house. So he made haste and came down and received him joyfully –Luke 19:1-6.
Only faith could make Jesus stop when he is hurrying to a mission. No doubt, Zaccheus faith made Him not only to stop but moved Jesus to ‘book’ a dinner appointment with Zaccheus. What the Custom Chief was going to the mountain to seek for, faith in the Lord Jesus brought it to his mansion. He would sit at the table with the Lord Jesus, who he had so much sought after. Jesus came to the spot where zaccheus had climbed the sycamore tree, stopped and called him to the amazement of the Custom Chief.
It was a heavily crowded environment yet Zaccheus faiths gave him unique miracle that thousand others never imagined would be possible. Now our concern is the ‘outrageous’ and ‘crazy’ nature of all real faith throughout the Bible. You cannot exercise genuine faith in God without hurting the feelings of your religious friends and families. How did you imagine that the friends and acquaintances of this public figure would view his crazy act of tree-climbing?
Imagine what his constituency –the custom people would feel by the ‘shameful’ act of their chief executive. In their understanding, they would be thinking, now how would the corporate world view your exalted office? Yes Zaccheu’s faith gesture is no doubt damaging to the corporate image of his office. But the truth is Bible-faith does not give a damn about images whether corporate or personal. Seekers of God and His Supernatural do not worry about what friends feel about them if only they would touch God and receive their miracle.
