Award excites Onyekuru

Super Eagles’ striker Henry Onyekuru has expressed his delight after being named the Most Promising Player of the Year in Belgium, ‘Soulier d’Or’ for 2017, reports. The Soulier d’Or or Belgian Golden Shoe is an award given in Belgium at the beginning of each year to the best footballer of the Belgian First Division for the past year. Onyekuru, who is currently recuperating from a knee injury he sustained in December, won the award ahead of Mechelen’s Hassan Bandé and Landry Dimata. The former Aspire Academy sensation polled 219 votes while Bande and Dimata recorded 162 and 128 votes, respectively.

The 20-year-old was a revelation playing for KAS Eupen in the Belgian top flight before he was signed by Everton and loaned out to Anderlecht immediately last summer. He scored 22 goals for Eupen last season and has added nine goals in 19 Belgian top-flight appearances for Anderlecht until his injury. Onyekuru, who was absent at the event due to doctors’ appointment in the UK, said he was delighted and thanked everyone who made the award a success for him.

“I am honoured to receive the Belgium talent of the year award; it has been a great journey so far and there is more to come. I thank the Almighty God for his grace, and I also want to thank my family for their love and support,” Onyekuru said.
