Benue killings: Police IG, force PPRO must go, group insists

A political group, Benue Arise Network (BAN) are insisting that President Muhammadu Buhari must sack the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris and the Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood for incompetence to contain the security in the state and for calling Governor Samuel Ortom as a drowning man”.

The group also raised an alarm over what it termed “a clandestine plot” by the police chief to allegedly redeploy Benue indigenes occupying sensitive positions to other parts of the country to serve as punishment for them.

It is particularly worried that the IGP had not been able to arrest the herdsmen since he was directed by the President to move to the state to contain the situation.

Addressing a news conference in Makurdi, the state capital, the Director of Media and Publicity of the organisation, Mr. Terfa Youghyough said the role played by the police IG in the herdsmen pogrom of innocent people of the state clearly shows that he is the spokesman of the Fulani militia group.

“We have seen the IGP Ibrahim Idris and the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Jimoh Moshood act as spokesmen for Fulani herdsmen, a group rated as the fourth deadliest terror group in the world. We have seen IGP blame the killing of innocent and defenseless people in Benue State on the anti-open grazing law, and the PPRO refer to Governor Ortom as a drowning man”.

“We also want to inform you of an alleged clandestine order by the IGP who directed the compilation of names of all Benue indigenes in positions of authority within the state with the intention to transfer them out of the state and replace them with those who will be doing his bidding”.

“It is in the light of this that we call for the immediate resignation, sack or dismissal of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris and the Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood”.

“We demand a full explanation from the Nigerian Police Police Force on what it’s spokesman means by this assertion that a governor is a drowning man. We are aware that police officers guard Governor Samuel Ortom and if the police now refer to him as a drowning man, is the security of the governor guaranteed”?

Mr. Youghyough called on President Buhari to act decisively by arresting the leadership of Miyetti Allah Kuatal Hore and declare it a terrorist organisation to put an end to the senseless killing of the people so that they can go back to their ancestral homes.

He regretted the insensitivity of the Buhari-led government to the continuous massacre of the people after the state voted massively for him to become the President during the 2015 general elections only for him to pay the state back in a bad way as evidenced in the non-availability of federal projects non-inclusion in the federal character.

The organisation called on the President to disarm and arrest the Fulani herdsmen who move freely with AK47 riffles, noting that failure to do so Nigerians will be left with no other option than believe that he has approved firearms for the herders to kill innocent and defenceless citizens.
