Mechanics get 21-day ultimatum to quit

Lagos State government yesterday served all the mechanics using under the bridge at Oregun/Opebi axis as workshops a 21-day ultimatum to vacate.
The Chairman of the state Task Force, Olayinka Egbeyemi, who disclosed this, said that the 21 days ‘Eviction Notice’ would expire on March 4.
Egbeyemi said activities of the mechanics had constituted serious environmental nuisance as used oil and contaminated diesel including waste water from car-wash were freely deposited on roads.
He added that bridge under was filled with mechanic scraps, used tyres and refuse generated by residents around the area which might eventually lead to flood whenever it rains.
The chairman alleged that miscreants and hoodlums terrorising innocent members of the public around Oregun, Opebi and Allen Avenue had turned the illegal mechanic workshops under the bridge to hideouts.
Arguing that the move was not to discourage artisans and sack people from their work places, Egbeyemi said that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode increased the number of mechanic villages across the state from 20 to 42 in order to create more jobs for artisans and other young people willing to acquire skills as automobile mechanics.
According to him, the 42 mechanic villages are spread across the state to accommodate more mechanics and other complimentary artisans such as vulganizers, rewires and panel-beaters.
Egbeyemi, however, warned all mechanics operating on all road set-backs and walk-ways to immediately vacate and move to any nearby mechanic village closer to them.
He said anyone caught violating any section of the state Environmental Sanitation Law would be seriously death with.
