Estate agent bags 1,230 years over N28m fraud

Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye of a Lagos High Court in Igbosere yesterday sentenced an estate agent, Babatunde Habeeb, to a cumulative jail term of 1,230 years for duping about 101 unsuspecting accommodation seekers to the tune of N28million. Habeeb, who is also known as Babatunde Salawudeen, a younger brother to a 43- year-old property developer, Alhaji Ishola Salawudeen, whom he connived with to dupe the prospective tenants of a building situated at 59, Oriola Street, Ketu Alapere, Lagos, was first arraigned before an Ebute- Metta Chief Magistrate’s Court alongside his brother in 2013.

He was subsequently granted bail, but later absconded. Upon his arrest around the Mushin area of Lagos where he went to work as a bricklayer, Habeeb was dragged before Justice Ipaye on an 82-count amended charge dated December 15, 2015 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), bordering on alleged conspiracy with his brother (said to be at large) to collect N28 million under false pretence. He was said to have perpetrated the fraud between May and December 2013 in Lagos. In his testimony before the court, the convict said that he was warned by his brother not to tell the victims that the 13 apartments had already been given out.
