Ekeremor’s paramount ruler relieved of duty, arrested

There was a mild drama yesterday in Bilabiri I community in Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State as the paramount ruler of the town, Soja Dede and his Deputy, Chief Orusaghae Fimne, were allegedly relived of their positions over their alleged roles in disrupting operations of an oil company in the area.

The paramount ruler and his deputy, it was learnt, were alleged to have led some hoodlums to disrupt operations of an oil company operating in the area over some claims, without the knowledge of the Community Development Committee (CDC) and other leadership of the community.

It was further gathered that the security personnel attached to the company reportedly arrested the paramount rulers and the hoodlums and took them to the community town hall to ascertain their claims.

However, drama ensued when the irate residents and the other community leaders expressed surprise over how their paramount rulers were been paraded with hoodlums by security personnel at the town hall. They immediately denied their claims and passed a vote of no confidence on the traditional rulers before unanimously calling for their removal through a voice vote, it was learnt.

This was as the community immediately installed Chief Otidi Miebiotu as the new acting paramount ruler to oversee the affairs of the community, pending the election of a substantive paramount ruler.

Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the community Council of Chiefs, Chief Kingsley Joseph, said the community was shocked over the actions of the paramount rulers, lamenting that they have not only brought disrepute to the exalted offices, but also disgraced the entire community. He said: “We are saddened and taken aback with this shameful and contemptuous action of our paramount rulers. Their action is unbecoming of the office which they hold.

They were chosen by the people and the people have also unanimously decided and exercised their rights to remove them, and that decision is sacrosanct. They have no option than to accept the decision in good faith.”
