Voter-illiteracy in Nigeria is of epidemic proportion – Group



A group, Coalition for Imo Development (CID) has raised the alarm over widespread voter-illiteracy across the country, warning that nothing would derail the country’s march towards a fully democratized nation faster than a populace with poor voter-education.


The group noted that qualitative voter-education was imperative to the growth of democracy anywhere in the world. Addressing newsmen in Owerri yesterday, Director-General of the group, Dr. Ugochukwu Ofoegbu regretted that across political parties and geopolitical zones in the country, the level of voter-illiteracy was alarming.


He said: “Voter-illiteracy has reached epidemic proportion in Nigeria and needs to be redressed urgently.


This is why after every election year, we complain for the next four years and when the opportunity comes around again to correct the mistakes of the last election, we find our people repeating the same mistake they have been complaining about. Voter-education can no longer be optional.


We owe it to our people to educate them enough on the demands of the ballot and the invaluable worth of their votes so they can be in a position to make informed choices and have the presence of mind to stand by their choices.”
