‘Nigeria has highest maternal mortality rate’

Worried by the high maternal mortality rate in Nigeria, the Rotary International has introduced an electronic data platform to enable it compile data and assess the performances of hospitals in the country.

The National Coordinator of the organisation, Prof Emmanuel Lufadeju, expressed worry that half of the 100,000 deliveries in the country yearly resulted in the death of either the mother or the child. He said the rate is the highest in the world.

Lufadeju said the electronic data platform would be introduced into the ministries of Health in order to enable it have the data and assess the performances of hospitals in the state, particularly, in the area of maternal care.

Speaking after meeting with the Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dr Wahab Adegbenro on the possibilities of introducing electronic data collection in the state, Lufadeju said similar programme had been introduced in Kaduna, Kano, FCT, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Ondo and Osun.

lufadeju explained that the electronic platform would help the government get the accurate data in order to analyze, plan and budget for the maternal care in the states.

He said the club has trained some health workers in ten hospitals in the state on the operation of the electronic platform.

His words: “We have trained some medical personnel. Through the electronic data platform, the data of the hospital is collected on the telephone of the hospital Registrar; the hospital programmes could be analyzed and generated from the telephone.”
