LASU establishes Directorate of Research, pledges cutting-edge innovation

Determined to further strengthen the institution academic and research capacity, as well as the delivery of its core mandate of community services, the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, Lagos, has established the Directorate of Research and Innovation. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, while inaugurating the Directorate during a ceremony, which took place at the Vice-Chancel-lor’sConferenceRoomatOjomaincampus of the state university, stated that the primary purpose of establishing the Directorate was to foster impactful research work with the business community. He charged the directorate to focus on innovation and patent of the university’s research work, saying: “We must have patent for our innovation. We want to sit with the industries and discuss with them the commercialisationof theinnovationandsolutionswe have provided.”

Members of the Committee are Prof. Olumuyiwa Omotola Odusanya, a Professor of Community Health and Primary Healthcare at the Lagos State University College of Medicine, as the Director; Dr. T. O. Yerokun-Oloko, Assistant Director; Mr. S. O. Asesanya, as Representative of Registrar on the committee and Mr. N. M. Henmaugo, who will serve on the committee as Representative of Bursar. Principal Officers of the university attheeventincludeDistinguished Prof. Peter Okebukola. Onthechoiceof themembersof the Committee, the Vice-Chancellor said: “We did a lot of headhunt to arrive at thechoiceof Prof. Odusanyaandallthe members of the committee. You must see yourself as capable, because we know you won’t give excuses.” He, however, expressed gratitude to Okebukola for consistently allowing the university to leverage on his global expertise in Research, Innovation and Development. In his acceptance remarks, Odunsanya assured the university managementof thewillingnessof themembers of the committee to deliver on their assignment, saying:

“I thank you for givingmeandmyteamthisresponsibility. We know it is a lot of work, but I assure you that we will do our best to deliver on the mandate.” Meanwhile, to ensure global best practices through the research centre, the management tasked the Directorate on its terms of reference, which are to work out plans to achieve the goals of the project, conduct a baseline study of innovation practices in the different departments, coverage of the varying innovations, encourage partnership and collaborations, determine industry needs by interfacing with big players in the industries call for entries for Faculty Research and Innovation Fair, as well as select the best for National Research Fair for the university, among others.

    I can only wish all the higher institution in Nigeria can emulate a good step such as this then we would have been pretty much ahead of where we currently find ourselves. Research breeds Innovation and that is why in the developed countries there’s no institution without a Research Center. LASU has taken the right step and I just hope others follow suite.
