NGO tasks govt on stroke awareness

Worried by the rising scourge of stroke among Nigerians and its attendant high mortality and morbidity in which over 190,000 people suffer the ailment annually, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), has called concerted efforts by the government and other critical stakeholders to fight the killer disease.

This was as the NGO, the ‘’Stroke Prevention and Care Initiative in Nigeria,’ last week, took its campaign against the ailment to FRCN complex, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos, where medical professionals, caregivers and herbal practitioners were assembled to attend to stroke victims and educate people about the causes, symptoms or signs and prevention of the medical condition.

Lamenting the high prevalence of stroke in the country, President of Stroke Prevention and Care Initiative in Nigeria, Otunba Olubunmi Osoba who expressed displeasure over poor attention being accorded stroke, unlike other ailments such as Sickle Cell Anemia, Diabetes, Hypertension and HIV/AIDS, among others, however, wondered why the government was lukewarm in the fight against stroke.

He, therefore, called on the government at all levels, international organisations, corporate organisations and other individuals to rise up to the challenge of fighting the disease so as to reduce the attack and rising cases of death occasioned by stoke in Nigerian.

The spokesperson for the organisation, Mrs. Kemi Olanrewaju, while drumming support for the NGO, appealed to well-meaning Nigerians and the government to support the initiative in its vigorous campaign to reduce stroke attack and death in the country.

She described stroke as a fast killing ailment globally, even as she reiterated the organisation’s commitment to collaborate with other groups and institutions to achieve its goals in the fight against the ailment.
