NIEPA partners UBEC, trains board members on management

The National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA), Ondo has concluded a five-day training on “Leadership and Management Techniques” for board members of the Katsina State Universal Basic Education Board (KSUBEB), which took place in Kaduna.

The capacity building workshop was organised by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), the agency supervising basic education sub-sector in collaboration with NIEPA as part of partnership between the two organisations. NIEPA is being jointly founded by the Federal Ministry of Education, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO/ IIEP Paris).

The workshop, according to the Chief Public Relations Officer for NIEPA, Mr. Sola Ebire, was designed to strengthen the capacity of members of Katsina SUBEB in their day-to-day administrative functions for ef-fective service delivery in their respective units and divisions. NIEPA in a statement signed by Ebire and which was made available to New Telegraph, said the board members commended UBEC and the institute for the wonderful opportunity availed them to participate in the capacity development programme, which aimed at building their capacity as leaders and heads of units and departments.

They, however, appealed that the programme should be expanded to accommodate other cadres of SUBEB management. The Director-General of NIEPA, Prof. Lilian Imuetinyan Salami, while underscoring the relevance of the training, said: “Education is a veritable tool for social change, national integration and development.

The extent to which these goals are reached in any country depends largely on the quality of education provided for the citizenry.” She reiterated that “the capacity development workshop on leadership and management techniques was borne out of the intricate roles of the participants in the process of integrating the appropriate human and material resources that are made available and effective for achieving the purposes of the programmes and policies to meet educational objectives.” Prof. Salami, however, added: “Instructional leadership, which is committed to the core business of teaching, learning and knowledge, involves setting clear goals, managing curriculum, monitoring lesson plans, allocating resources and evaluating teachers regularly to promote teacher-pupil learning and growth.”
