Residents of Mbiabong Ikot Essien in Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State will soon have every reason to smile as Governor Udom Emmanuel has ordered the immediate action to that would address the hardship, threat to lives and property confronting them as a result of incessant flooding ravaging the entire community.
The state Commissioner for Works, Mr. Ephraim Inyangeyen, who led a team of engineers to supervise the demolition of structures to give way for drainage construction, recalled that the ministry had earlier ascertained the magnitude of the problem, with a view to coming up with proactive measures that would salvage the situation. Addressing the people of the area, the commissioner expressed worry over the plight of the victims of the flood and conveyed the concern of the governor, who, he disclosed, had ordered urgent, speedy and immediate steps be taken to bring succour to the people, as well as to forestall impending damage to the dual carriage highway. Inyangeyen further explained that to correct the error, there was the need for drainage to be constructed to discharge the water at least two kilometres away from the main road, adding that for this to happen, several houses would have to go down, including some structures in the Shelter Afrique Estate, particularly properties that were close to the main road.
While assuring that adequate compensation would be paid to enable owners to relocate from affected property, he urged the youths in the area to cooperate with the government and contractors handling the project in order to ensure speedy completion of the project.
Earlier, the Village Head, Etteidung Hosea Edem Okon, recounted the damage the flood had caused the health, property and businesses of the people of the community, and expressed gratitude to the governor for listening to their cry and intervening to salvage the situation.
