Borno: NAF hits Boko Haram’s locations, kills terrorists

Nigerian Air Force (NAF) yesterday said its newly-launched operation in the North-East has continued to yield results, with Sunday’s destruction of Boko Haram-inhabited locations on the fringes of Lake Chad.

Specifically, the NAF said the air operations targeted identified locations at Bukar Meram and Tumbun Allura in Borno State.

The Director of Public Relations and Information (DOPRI), Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, who made the disclosure in a statement, said “several” of the suspected terrorist elements were killed during the operation.

Daramola added that the exercise was executed following Intelligence, Surveillance and Response (ISR) mission, which had discovered the existence of such hideouts.

He said: “In continuation of Operation Thunder Strike 2, the Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation Lafiya Dole… (on) 9 September 2018, destroyed some Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT) facilities and neutralised several insurgents at Bukar Meram and Tumbun Allura, both on the fringes of Lake Chad, Borno State.

“The attack at Bukar Meram was conducted based on credible human intelligence reports indicating the presence of some BHTs, along with their equipment, within the settlement.

“This was also subsequently confirmed by successive days of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions. Accordingly, the ATF detailed a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Alpha Jet aircraft and helicopter gunship to carry out air interdiction at the location. Two of the identified locations were subsequently destroyed in strikes by the NAF aircraft and several BHTs neutralised.”

According to the DOPRI, a similar operation on September 4 had resulted in the killing of many suspects, and destruction of their facilities in the same state.

He said: “Similarly, ISR missions had indicated that some BHTs were attempting to regroup at another location in Tumbun Allura after their bases in the settlement were destroyed on 4 September 2018.

“Consequently, the identified location within the town was attacked and destroyed by a combination of NAF Alpha Jet and F-7Ni aircraft to further ensure the insurgents are unable to resume using the settlement as a base of operation.

“The NAF, working in concert with surface forces, will sustain the momentum of Operation Thunder Strike 2 with a view to seeking out and destroying vestiges of the insurgents in the Lake Chad green fringes.”
