Egypt, six others in Abuja for CAVB U-21 qualifiers

Seven African countries have confirmed their participation in the U-21 Boys Volleyball Africa Nations Cup taking place at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Abuja from September 10 to 20.

The countries are defending champion, Egypt, Congo DR, Botswana, Cameroon, Morocco, Tunisia Rwanda and hosts Nigeria.

The competition which will serve as qualifiers for the World Cup taking place in Japan next year will start on Wednesday, September 12 and end on September 19.

Speaking on the preparation, President of Nigeria Volleyball Federation Muss Nimrod said all arrangements had been put in place to make the championship a hitch free one.

Nimrod said he was confident that the Nigeria U-21 team would emerge as champions at the end of the qualifiers by dethroning Egypt.

“Our U-19 team won gold at the African Youth Games in Algeria earlier this year and I believe the U-21 team will follow in that footsteps by winning this championship,” he added.

“Although we don’t have sponsors for this tournament but Nigeria Olympic Committee President Habu Gumel and Ministry of Youth and Sports have come to our rescue.

NOC President Gumel alone has taken care of accommodation of the visiting technical officials coming from Cairo in Egypt while the players have equally taken care of.

The facilities are world standard and the draws for the competition proper will be done on Tuesday as tournament opening ceremony is slated for Wednesday.

The ceremony will be declared open by declared Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, while the curtain will be drawn by Secretary General of the Federation Alhaji Mustapha Boss on September 19.
