Enelemah defends role in GEM project



The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Okechukwu Enelemah, yesterday, defended his role in the administration of $35 million World Banks’ Growth Employment (GEM) Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) fund, saying World Bank’s rules were adhered to.


He also defended the appointment of his former staff, as GEM project Coordinator, saying it conforms with conditions of the World Bank for administering GEM .

A petition addressed to the President, Muhammadu Buhari by Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream), Hon. Mark Gbillah (PDP, Benue) had accused Enelemah of diverting $35 million World Bank soft loans Growth Employment (GEM) Project to illegal Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) fund.


The lawmaker further claimed that, three months into the GEM project, the minister appointed a former staff of his personal company, African Capital Alliance, Mr. Ugo Ikemba, as the project coordinator in violation of the laid down rules and guidelines.
