At a time when women are seeking increased representation in the public office, the Deputy Governor of Lagos, Dr Idiat Adebule has bagged the most outstanding deputy governor in Nigeria by the Association of Local Government of Nigeria, ALGON beating other male deputy governors and her female counterparts. She is obviously not the only female deputy governor in the country but she was adjudged to have done better than her male counterparts.
Although the criteria for award of the best deputy governor by the union of the local government in Nigeria was unknown, New Telegraph gathered that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s deputy could have picked the award as a result of her loyalty to her boss and dedication to duty.
Last weekend, the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, was filled to capacity as season administrators, politicians, captains of industry, public office holders and other dignitaries from all walks of life gathered to honour the Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Adebule and other awardees.
The award ceremony that was organised by ALGON, comprising of the 774 Local governments in Nigeria in conjunction with Absolute Security and Consultancy Services Limited also had in attendance some members of Lagos delegates. Presenting the award to Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Adebule, the ALGON National President, Tanko Gambo Kagara, said that Dr. Adebule was voted as most outstanding deputy governor in the country after consideration of her “pedigrees, excellent contributions to good governance, innovations and implementation of projects that have direct impacts on development of the society.”
According to him, the award was given in recognition of her various contributions to good governance especially in the implementation of Governor Ambode-led administration’s reforms of the education sector.
The National President explained that the Lagos deputy governor’s humility, good conduct and passion for excellence made her to stand tall and fit for the award, adding that her selflessness and dint for hard work qualified her for the award. He noted that Adebule’s recognition and subsequent award along with other recipients is hope to motivate other people in similar positions of authority to work harder in bringing development to people at the grassroots level.
He noted that ALGON Grassroots Outstanding Governor Award Programme was aimed at recognizing governors who have efficiently managed their scarce resources to better the lots of their people through implementation of projects that have direct impacts on lives of the people.
The ALGON boss pointed out that the recognition was extended to Adebule in view of various initiatives she has introduced especially in the education sector and how various reforms of governor Ambode led administration have been carefully implemented under her watch, especially in elevating standard of education in the state to rank among the best in the world.
Receiving the award, Adebule commended ALGON and Absolute Security and Consultancy Services Limited for their efforts at promoting good governance through recognition of excellence. She noted that the award would spur encourage her to do more in rendering selfless service to the society, noting that the reward for hard work is more work
The deputy governor who was represented by her Permanent Secretary Mrs Yetunde Odejayi, stated that the exemplary leadership quality of her boss, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode helped her to excel, as according to her, the governor gave her total freedom to use her initiatives to contribute to the success of his administration
She said: “I must sincerely dedicate this award to His Excellency, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode who gave me total support and freedom to work with him. He is a leader per excellence, he listens a lot and respects other peoples’ opinions in all matters, just as in the state Executive Council meetings, the governor would allow different opinions in all matters before we jointly take a decision that we know would benefit the masses.
I therefore dedicate this award to him and I thank the Almighty Allah that you have considered me fit for this award without knowing any one of you before, this award will further help me to do more as I promise my commitment to the vision of good governance as represented by my boss, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode.”
