Govt asked to engage female teachers to boost girl-child enrollment

Stakeholders and professionals in the education sector have said one of the most effective ways of boosting girl-child enrollment in schools, especially in the North, was to recruit more female teachers into the school system.

This was one of the major thrust of a media dialogue on “Girls for Girls (G4G) Initiative,” organised by the United Nations Children Fund UNICEF and the United Kingdom Department for International Development (UKAID) in Zamfara State.

The Secretary General, High Level Women Advocate (HiLWA), Halima Maigari, explained that it was a proven fact that girls and parents were more comfortable around female teachers than their male counterparts when it comes to teaching and knowledge acquisition. “When we visited some communities, most of the girls told us time and time again that they prefer a female teacher to a male teacher.

Maigari further explained that HiLWA in collaboration with the Bauchi State government, had already introduced a training scholarship scheme for female teachers, whereby the female students, who have completed their secondary school education, could go to acquire the Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE).

Under the scheme, he said the female students were selected across various communities in the state to fill the existing gaps of female teachers in schools.

Meanwhile, the UNICEF Education Specialist, Azuka Menkiti, hinted that the G4G Initiative revealed that girls are more at home and open to mentors who are trained females teachers to discuss personal, hygiene and educational problems.
