Armed men have attacked a police patrol van, killed an officer, critically injured others stole their AK47 rifles.
The incident occurred on Monday at the Cable Point area in Asaba, the Delta State capital.
The policemen, attached to ‘C’ Divisional Headquarters, were said to been waylaid by the hoodlums over incessant extortion of road users on the streets of Asaba metropolis at nights.
It was learnt that the gunmen attacked the policemen about 9p.m. on Monday with guns, machetes and other dangerous weapons, and subjected them various degrees of punishment, before carting away two AK47 rifles which were reportedly abandoned by two fleeing policemen, out of the five-man squad.
The attack brought to three the number of such attacks on police patrol teams by gunmen within two months in the Asaba metropolis.
Although no life was lost at the Issele-Asagba attack two months ago, it was learnt that two AK47 rifles were snatched and taken away.
Two policemen who were severely injured with machete cuts in the Monday night attack were currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital while a police officer died on the spot.
The state Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Mustafa, confirmed the incident but said some suspects had been arrested in connection with the crime.
He said the victims were caught unawares in the course of discharging their duty.
Mustafa vowed that anyone found culpable in the attack would face the full wrath of the law.
