Kaduna-Abuja-bound train kills 52 cattle

Police in Kaduna State yesterday said about 52 cattle were crushed to death by a Kaduna-Abuja-bound train. The development caused panic among travellers who thought that the train was attacked by bandits. However, the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmad Abdulrahaman, told journalists during a conference in Kaduna yesterday that no life was lost in the incident.

The commissioner disclosed that about 11.45a.m. yesterday the command received a distressed call of the accident and he personally led principal staff of the command to the spot at Kasarami in Jere District of Kargarko Local Government Area. He said: “When we got to the spot, we found out that contrary to earlier calls of insurgents’ attack what, actually happened was an accident.

The Fulani herders, who passed the night at Kasarami, asked if they could cross over with their cattle and were misinformed by some people that there were no rail services on Sunday. “It was when they were half way that a fast moving train from Rigasa station on the way to Abuja approached them. “The train was on a high speed and in the process crushed to death 52 cattle.”

Abdulrahaman disclosed that 27 which were still alive were ordered to be slaughtered and sold out to residents of the area to reduce the lost on the owner of the cattle. He added: “I want to assure the good people of Kaduna State that what happened was an accident and no life was lost in the process. “The Fulani were on their way back to Katsina State. I had a meeting with their leaders and the farmers in the area in order to check future occurrence. “I called on the people of Kaduna State to go about their lawful activities as the command is doing everything to ensure that lives and property are protected in the state.”
