BREAKING: New Minimum Wage: NLC commence nationwide strike midnight

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed its state councils and industrial unions across the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory, to mobilise workers to down tools, as Congress commences a warning strike tomorrow, over Federal Government’s failure to meet its demand on New Minimum Wage.

The NLC had given government a 14 day ultimatum to reconvene the Tripartite committee, which was set up by President Muhammad Buhari in November last year, to arrive at a new minimum wage which it promised to announce and implement by the end of the third quarter, being September 2018.

However, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige, had few weeks ago mentioned that the New Minimum Wage was no longer feasible this September.

In a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja, General Secretary of the NLC, Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson, disclosed that unless the government meets its demands, all was set for workers to sit at home across the country.

In a letter addressed to all Industrial Unions and NLC State Councils, he said, “This is to inform you that the Organised Labour shall commence nation-wide warning strike in respect of the non-implementation of the National Minimum Wage, effective from Midnight of Wednesday, 26th September 2018.

“All Industrial Unions and all State Councils are to commence mobilisation immediately for an effective strike action, nation-wide.”

During its National Executive Counci held in Abuja on 19 September 2018, the NLC President Comrade Ayuba Wabba, expressed disappointment at the manner in which members of the new minimum wage tripartite committee on the side of federal government unilaterally adjourned the tripartite meeting on the day the committee was expected to complete its assignment.

According to him, this was against the principle of collective bargaining as provided in ILO conventions 98 and 131 on minimum wage setting process, which Nigeria had domesticated.
