PHOTOS: Two armed robbers killed in Umuahia operation

Luck ran out of two armed robbers in Umuahia, Abia State capital when they were killed by a security man who was among the passengers of the bus they wanted to rob and averted what would have been the second bus robbery of the day by hoodlums.

The two dead armed robbers and a third who was fatally injured were arrested by the police after the shooting on the early hours of Monday. The incident occurred when the robbers tried to rob a bus belonging to Cross Country transport company with registration number EPE 482 XT.

According to the driver of the bus, who did not mention his name, the bus was coming from Kaduna en route to Calabar. When it got to a bad point at the Enugu –Port Harcourt expressway, close to the Abia Tower of Peace, a Jeep with six occupants came from the rear but while he was trying to give it chance to cross it stopped in front of the bus.

The driver said that all of a sudden the four doors opened simultaneously and with it three heavily armed men alighted. “Two of them pointed a gun at me while one opened the passenger side and entered into the bus.”

The robbers, he narrated, took control of the vehicle and made their way back towards the NNPC Mega Petrol Station, Nkwoegwu on the expressway.

He further said that “Unknown to the three robbers, there was security personnel in the bus, who with light of speed, shot three of them, killing two, while one was arrested following a serious injury. When the other three still in the Jeep saw what happened they sped off.”

Eyewitnesses around the tower said that the operation would have been the second bus robbery that same day, even as the point of attack was few metres away from the army checkpoint.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) SP Geoffrey Ogbonna has confirmed the incident.
