Rival groups within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State are set for a showdown over the party’s mode of primaries for 2019 general election.
There is apprehension in the party as the APC National Working Committee (NWC) yesterday overruled the state leadership of the party over the latter’s adoption of indirect primaries in choosing candidates.
Chief Derin Adebiyi-led state executive of APC backed by Governor Ibikunle Amosun dumped direct primaries last week and resolved to use indirect mode of primary to select candidates.
But while speaking on a current affairs programme monitored on a private radio station in Abeokuta, the acting National Publicity Secretary of APC, Yekini Nabena declared that direct primaries had been approved for the state.
Nabena said the NWC stood by its earlier position that direct mode of primary election would be used across board in the state.
He said: “The state chapters of the party can make their request known but the NWC stands by its position and decision on direct primary to choose candidates across board.
“The Ogun APC cannot set examination questions for itself and mark same. The position of the NWC is clear on the mode of primaries to be used in choosing candidates. Where consensus fails, direct primary is the only way forward.
However, the Ogun APC yesterday insisted that there was no going back on the preparation for indirect primaries for all elective offices in the state, where consensus had failed.
In a statement by the state Publicity Secretary, Chief Wole Elegbede, the party said venues of the indirect primaries would be communicated to the concerned delegates at the appropriate time.
Elegbede said: “The clarification becomes necessary following the spate of speculations in sections of the media that direct primary option will be adopted.
“Preparation is in advance stage for the conduct of presidential primary by Ogun APC which will be by direct primary option while the primaries for other offices will be by indirect option.
“The party held a meeting with key stakeholders on Monday evening and the objective of the meeting is to provide information and prepare our members for the presidential direct primary on Friday, 28th September, 2018.
“We also prepared for the indirect primaries for the offices of Governor, Senate, House of Reps and House of Assembly. The presidential direct primary will be held in all the 236 wards of the state while the venues for the indirect primaries have been designated. The venues of the indirect primaries will be communicated to the concerned delegates at the appropriate time.
“The Guideline for indirect primary has been availed the Ogun APC by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.”
