Shettima, Garbai flex muscles over Borno Central

AHMED MIRINGA writes on the contest for Borno Central between Governor Kashim Shettima and Senator Baba Kaka Garbai

As the second tenure of Governor Kashim Shettima is about to come to an end, the political atmosphere in Borno State is thickening by the day, especially with his declaration of interest to go to the Senate. This has not only altered the political calculation in the state, but poses a great threat to the ambition of the incumbent senator, Baba Kaka Garbai, representing Borno Central in the Red Chamber of the National Assembly. Senator Garbai is from the royal family of Borno Emirate and he is a brother to the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Garbai, as well as a close friend and associate of Governor Shettima, before they parted ways due to the bovernor’s bid to succeed him in 2019. Some politicians were also of the view that if he becomes the governor, the decision and poli-cies of the government will be taken in the palace.

But with the present political development in the state, returning to the Senate will be a herculean task for him as Governor Shettima has the political structure of the APC in the state as well as government machinery to stop him.

However, the issue of which system of primaries to adopt in electing party candidates in the state has brought a crack in the APC in the state as former governor of the state, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff is standingtheyof GovernorShettima in choosing his successor.

However, according to some political observers in the state, Governor Shettima’s dream of going to the Senate may be difficult to achieve due to a number of factors if he eventually become the flags bearer for Borno Central. Whether Shettima will scale through the obstacle on his way to the Senate or not, will depend on the way he plays his card in addressing these issues raised by the workers, politicians and how he is able to mend fence with Sheriff.
