AFCON Qualifier: Ighalo hat-trick sinks Pirates in Uyo

Super Eagles of Nigeria were too good for the Pirates of Libya in the third match of the ongoing African Cup of Nations qualifiers played at the Akwa Ibom Township Stadium, Uyo, as they defeated their opponent 4-0.

Changchyn Yatai of China striker, Odion Ighalo, was the hero as his hattrick propelled the Eagles to the second position behind South Africa who defeated Seychelles 6-0 in the other game of the group.

Nigeria started the game on a bright note when Ighalo capitalised on a mistake by Murad Abubakr in goal for Libya which led to a penalty in the fifth minute of the game with the striker dusting himself up to convert the spot kick.

Apart from the goal, there were no major incidents in the first half of the game apart from an injury to returning Shehu Abdullahi, who was replaced by Ola Aina. The Eagles continued from where they stopped in the second half and were rewarded with the second goal in the 60th minute through Ighalo, who had a World Cup to forget few months ago.

The former Watford striker, however, completed his hat-trick with the third goal in the 75th minute as the Eagles cruised on.

Samuel Kalu completed the onslaught in the 90th minute with a fantastic goal scored from the edge of the box. Super Eagles started the qualifier with a home defeat against South Africa before a 3-0 defeat of Seychelles in their last game.

With the victory, Nigeria are now second on the table one point behind South Africa and two points against Libya with the second leg of the game coming up in Tunisia on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, has said the second leg coming up on Tuesday in Tunisia will be tough as Libya will be coming out to show they are not bad. “We really worked for the victory as we already watched them in their last game against South Africa,” Rohr said after the game.

“It is going to be hard in Tunisia because they will want to come out and show that they are not a bad side even though they conceded four goals.” He added that they will be missing Abdullahi who copped an injury in the game and will be going to Tunisia with 22 players as they already lost Ogenyi Onazi to injury before the first game.
