Gbenga Ashafa battles for recognition

It is largely no longer news that fair complexioned Lagos-born, Senator Gbenga Bariyu Ashafa who represents Lagos East senatorial district at the Red Chamber of the National Assembly, would have started preparing to give way for another person to take over his seat in the next dispensation as his days are now numbered since he lost at the primaries. What might be of interest, however, is that the lawmaker, who is in his 60’s, may have started the battle to retain his tag as a loyal one to the powers in his homestead, Lagos.


As the only senator in the state that did not return, some see it as humiliation on the person of Ashafa. Meanwhile, the party hierarchy has not only abandoned him to lick his wound alone, he’s also being labelled as non-loyal as he tried to alter party arrangement. As a known loyalist, it was learnt arrangement was made for Ashafa to handover to Honourable Bayo Osinowo who eventually won the primary to run as anointed candidate of the party and as such, no tale of division would be attached to the transition.


Ashafa, having been part of the arrangement, sources said, he decided to go behind to collect form of intent even as he allegedly resulted to avoiding party leaders who might want to prevail on him to drop his ambition.


With the election held twice and Ashafa clinically defeated, he’s said to have come to terms with the fact that whatever he was banking on to pull a surprise could not deliver him and having lost the election, he’s said to be looking for how to retain his privileged status in Lagos APC so he doesn’t lose out on both sides.
