Hit-and-run driver kills nursing student in Anambra, colleagues protest

A hit-and-run driver on Monday reportedly killed a second-year nursing student, Emmanuel Aniagudo, of Iyienu Mission hospital, Anambra State.
The incident, which occurred in Ogidi in the Idemili North Local Government Area of the state, promptly triggered protest amongst students of the school.
An eyewitness said: “Aniagudo was crossing a road near the hospital when he was knocked down by the speeding car.
“The driver sped off, leaving the deceased in the pool of blood in a gutter.”
The protesting students carried placards, barricading the major road and making a bonfire with used tyres.
Some of the placards read, “Enough of these killings”, “we need check-points”, there should be bumps inside the hospital premises and on the major road where our colleague was hit”, “hospital management should compensate the family.”
Reacting, the Hospital Administrator, Rev. Tochukwu Okwuchukwu, described the incident as unfortunate, assuring them of the immediate installation of speed breakers on the road leading to the school.
“I’ve appealed to the students to calm down and to leave the major road leading to the hospital compound to avoid miscreants cashing in on the situation to cause more havoc.
“We will build the speed breakers on the hospital roads as they demanded. In fact, we are starting off immediately,” the administrator stated.

Serial rapist given 33 life sentences for attacks on 11 women, children

Britain’s worst rapist Joseph McCann has been sentenced to life behind bars after carrying out a series of brutal sex attacks on 11 women and children.
McCann, 34, refused to show up to the Old Bailey on Monday afternoon to hear his sentencing by Mr Justice Edis because he claimed he had a ‘bad back’.
He also chose not to appear via video-link. During a two-week cocaine and vodka-fuelled rampage, the predator abducted and raped his victims, aged 11 to 71, at knife-point in London, Watford and the North West, reports.
McCann, who had addresses in Aylesbury and Harrow, was eventually caught up a tree after being chased by police officers who interrupted his attempt to rape two 14-year-old girls.
Mr Justice Edis branded McCann a ‘classic psychopath’, ‘a coward, violent bully and paedophile’, as he sentenced him to 33 life sentences with a minimum term of 30 years.
On Friday, a jury deliberated for five hours to find him guilty of 37 charges relating to 11 victims, including eight rapes, false imprisonment and kidnap.
McCann was also not present for his trial.
The convicted burglar and one of the UK’s first ASBO teens, had been freed by mistake just two months before he set out on his campaign of terror, between April 21 and May 5, this year.
McCann should have been recalled to prison indefinitely after he committed a burglary while on licence for a offence he committed in 2008, after threatening to stab a pensioner as he raided his home. Instead, he was handed a new fixed prison sentence and released automatically half way through, without Parole Board involvement, in February 2019.

Alleged arrest: Northeners in Lagos now live in fear- Yerima

The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) has accused the task force in Lagos of humiliating and harassing northerners in the state describing it as totally unacceptable.
In a statement issued on Monday, the AYCF led by its National President, Shetimma Yerima, accused the task force of going to residential areas at odd hours to harass and arrest northerners in the state.
While demanding an explanation from the Lagos State government, the group called on President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently intervene to forestall any likely consequence of extreme provocation.
Many of the residents affected are said to be owners of motorcycles, most of which are operated on commercial bases, but Yerima argues that Lagos never banned their operation. The laws of the state only restrict them to certain roads.
The statement read: “Our attention has been drawn to an ongoing brigandage  in Lagos against innocent Northerners who are in Lagos to earn their living legitimately.
“We reliably gathered that, using a gestapo style the Lagos Task Force officials have been invading homes of Northerners in Lagos in ungodly hours of the night and carting away motorcycles while forcefully abducting the occupants and hauling them into detention.
“We dare say we have not seen this kind of Impunity against Northerners in recent years. It is even strange that this is coming from the Southwest, a region that expects the North to hand over the 2023 Presidency to its own. We have reason to now wonder if the Southwest truly expects the North to make it a successor in 2023.”

‘How we caused Isheri-Olofin pipeline explosion in Lagos’

‘How we caused Isheri-Olofin pipeline explosion in Lagos’

A

27-year-old father of five, Smart Adeyemi, has told detectives attached to the Lagos State Police Command, how he and his partners in crime caused the rupture of a pipeline of the Nigeria National Petroleum Cooperation (NNPC) at the Isheri-Olofin area of the metropolis, leading to Thursday explosion that killed three people.

According to the suspect, he came all the way from Balyesa State to participate in syphoning of fuel from the vandalised pipelines.

Adeyemi, who said that they were 10 men that embarked on the deadly mission, further confessed that his sole aim was to make quick money from the operation, so as to take care of his wife, who had just put to bed.

The suspect, who spoke with our correspondent at the weekend, said: “It was because I needed money to take care of my wife and new baby that I called Love my friend to assist me with some money. Love refused to assist me with the money, instead he asked me to come to Lagos and join him in oil bunkering business. I initially told him I wouldn’t be able to do it, but because of my wife, I had to go. I was desperate and I decided to join him. My role was to bring out gallons of fuel out of the creek and arrange them inside our operational bus. Love sent me N12, 000 for my fare to Lagos. He also gave me directions on how to move from Balyesa to Ikorodu in Lagos, where I met him in a creek. We later moved to Idimu area of Lagos State, where the bunkering took place. When we got to Idimu, we slept in a shantty, close to the pipeline. We started operation on Wednesday night.”

Adeyemi further narrated: “It was only four of the gang leaders that went to siphon the fuel, including Love. Four of us were told to stay back in order to load the gallons into the bus. We also put some of the fuel in sacks. It was when I was receiving a phone call from my wife that the explosion occurred. My escape from the scene was nothing short of a miracle. I don’t even know what happened to those siphoning the fuel with us. I didn’t know where I was running to; I started wandering about in the creek until some policemen arrested me. I would have escaped, but I didn’t know the terrain. I knew what I did was dangerous, but I had to do something to survive. I was formerly into timber business, but the income was poor, so I had to go into oil bunkering. The oil bunkering was actually supposed to be trial run, but the explosion ruined everything.”

Meanwhile, a Celestial Church of Christ Pastor, Prophet Clement Oni and three others were also arrested in connection with the explosion. Oni was said to be using his church as the storage house for stolen fuel. Police found gallons of fuel buried within the church premises of the prophet.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Bala Elkana, while confirming the arrest of the suspects, said they were apprehended by detectives from the state command.

Elkana added: “Three of the suspects were arrested at Ijora area with 14 sacks of fuel, while the pastor was also arrested in his hideout. Some of the recovered gallons of fuel were discovered buried in his church. The suspects would be charged to court after completion of investigation. We’re still hunting others at large. They will soon be arrested.”

One of the suspects, Maikoma, told our correspondent that he and his accomplice usually dispossessed people of their valuables, adding that, “if we don’t get any valuables from them, we rape their women as compensation. We rape their women if our victims couldn’t give us money or valuables. But our move on the fateful day we were arrested was dashed by the team of policemen that arrested us.”

According to the Niger State Police Command, the two suspects were part of those terrorising residents of Dynabado Village in Munya Local Government Area of the state.

Maikoma and Batime, both from Fulani Camp Injita Village Munya, were arrested by a team of policemen attached to Munya Police Division after a tip-off from a member of the public.

The suspects are reportedly known for their nefarious activities in the area. It was further gathered that the suspects invaded the house of Tachi Abuja, inflicted injury on his left hand and made away with his valuables.

Findings also have it that the suspects invaded the house of Bulus Barde of Kingbado Village Munya on November 16, 2019, robbed him of N160, 000 and raped two women in his house.

It was reliably gathered that the suspects had been dispossessing residents of the area of their valuables at gunpoint for some time.

The Niger State Deputy Police Public Relations Officer (DPPRO), Uthman Umar, confirmed the arrest yesterday, disclosing that the suspects had admitted to robbery and rape.

Umar said: “The police recovered a Fulani stick, two cutlasses and a torch from the suspects. The matter would be charged to court after investigation.”
