Anambra: 17 political parties back Ekwunife’s ambition

Seventeen political parties under the aegis of Anambra Rainbow Coalition in Anambra state yesterday threw their weight behind Senator Uche Ekwunife, who recently defected to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). According to their spokesman, Elder Philip Umezinwa, who spoke with reporters in Awka yesterday, said “we the members of this organization officially declare our support for Senator Uche Ekwunife. We were with her when she was in APC and now that she has joined the PDP we have joined her. “We are members of seventeen political parties in the state known as the Rainbow Coalition. Ekwunife is our candidate and we know that she can win in any political party.” Reports had it at the weekend that Ekwunife had dumped the APC for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) but no official confirmation as the party’s chairman was unavailable when our correspondent visited the PDP’s office.

Ekwunife was a candidate of the party in the last general election which she won before the election tribunal nullified her victory. She later joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) where she contested for the Anambra Central Senatoral District ticket of the party and won. But some aspirants in the APC went to court, challenging the conduct of the primary election of the party and in response to their petitions to the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, the electoral body was said to have declared that there was no primary election in the senatorial district. Meanwhile, the candidate of PDP for Anambra Central District, Chief Charles Odukwe, who was said to have announced that he was no longer interested in the election and Chief Emelie Okika was alleged to have been given the party’s ticket until the return of Ekwunife.

Confirming the return of Ekwunife, the PDP state secretary of election Committee, Chief Ugochukwu Okeke said that “there are very strong indications that Ekwunife has joined our party, the PDP and I can tell you on good authority that she has already been welcomed back into our family. “Our party is open to anybody and we do not chase people away from the party. You know she was our member and she won the last election under our party.”
