Hoodlums burn houses, shops, vehicles in A’Ibom community

Youths believed to be hoodlums have burnt several houses and shops at Nnung Oku Ekanem, at Awa community, the hometown of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel.

Hoodlums said to be from Afaha Ubium village were having a field day in the neighbouring village, Nnung Oku Ekanem, setting houses and shops in the area ablaze as well as destroying property worth millions of naira.

The crisis, which started since Tuesday, has rendered several families homeless.

Though Emmanuel was reportedly in his hometown when the crisis started, the state government was yet to respond to the situation at press time.

The invaders, who had retreated to their enclaves, regrouped to launch fresh attacks on the people of Nnung Oku Ekanem.

Residents of the area, who were fleeing their homes in drove, said the hoodlums were attacking from Edisong Street at Nnung Oku Ekanem village.

Residents were calling for the immediate intervention of the state government and relevant security agencies to stem the tide.

Witnesses, Mr. Augustine Akpan, Ofonime Honesty and Joseph Atainyang, said the situation had gone out of control.
