Snipper on beans’ll lead to food poisoning, sudden death

A Professor of Community Medicine and Consultant Public Health Physician with the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH)/ College of Medicine University of Lagos (CMUL), Bayo Onajole, has raised the alarm over the use of snipper and other dangerous chemicals currently being used by some farmers to protect beans and other grain products from insects. Speaking in an exclusive interview with the New Telegraph, Onajole explained that using snipper and other cheap chemicals to prevent insects from damaging beans would result in food poisoning and sudden death. Similarly, other negative health impact that would result from the consumption of such beans included diarrhoea, vomiting and damage of inter-nal organs, said the consultant public health physician. A trending video had shown some young men spraying snipper on beans being packaged in sacs for sale. The video has been trending on social media, leaving many Nigerians, wondering about the safety of Nigerians consuming such beans.

However, reacting to how to avert the highlighted complications, Onajole advised the three tiers of government to increase awareness and education to farmers on the right chemicals to use in the preservation of legumes including beans and other grain products. In addition, he urged the governments to find ways of making the right preservative chemicals not only accessible but affordable to ensure that it was only appropriate chemicals that would be used for protection of agricultural products. Also, he stressed that the farmers must need adequate knowledge on the appropriate dose and measurement of chemicals to be used to preserve beans and other legumes and grains in the country. He said: If they don’t use the right chemical, it could either lead to sudden death or cause other problems in the body such as diarrhoea, vomiting that could damage other organs of the body. If the dose is high enough, it can lead to sudden death.”

It would be recalled that some chemical compounds, including both fumigants and contact insecticides, approved by Food and Agricultural Organisation of the World Health Organisation (WHO) for use on food grains to control storage insects, are regularly reviewed. Organophosphorus compoundsareorganiccompounds containing phosphorus, which are used primarily in pest control as an alternative to chlorinatedhydrocarbonsthatpersist in the environment.

The organophosphorus compounds are used on agricultural products to prevent insects eating beans and grains from multiplying. In general, the contact insecticides that are approved for use are Organophosphorus compounds of relatively low mammalian toxicity,which are considered to be non-hazardous when applied at prescribed dilution rates for the purposes indicated. They are also relatively safer to handle than many of the pesticides quite commonly approved and widely used for preharvest pest control.
