Three die, others missing as boat capsizes in Lagos

Three people yesterday lost their lives while yetto- be-ascertained passengers were missing when the boat in which they were travelling capsized in Lagos. But the General Manager of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Mr. Damilola Emmanuel, said only 12 passengers were missing in the Wednesday night accident. He added that the boat was conveying 20 passengers, but some residents argued that there could be more passengers since the operators were used to overloading their boats.

It was learnt that LASWA, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS), State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) and Marine Police had a hectic time trying to rescue lives. At press time, rescuers were still searching for the remaining passengers.

The incident occurred about 7.30p.m. on Wednesday when the passengers were returning home. They were heading to Ojo from Coconut jetty when the incident occurred. Emmanuel said the 20-passenger capacity boat had 18 passengers and two crew members on board when it capsized en route to Ojo from Coconut jetty, a Lagos suburb.

The LASWA boss said an onthe- spot investigation carried out by the agency showed that the incident was caused by a collision between the passenger boat operated by “God Bless” and a wooden water supply service boat. He added: “Unfortunately, three persons were confirmed dead and their bodies have been deposited in the morgue.

Twelve persons were rescued while five persons are missing.” Emmanuel said rescue efforts were carried out by the combined efforts of LASWA, LASAMBUS, and SEHMU which led to the timely rescue of 12 passengers. He added that recovery efforts would continue until those missing had been found.
