The Super Eagles are set to play two grade A international friendly matches ahead of their participation at the 2019 African Cup of Nations but will have to wait till after the April 12 draw to know who they will face in the warm-up games. The board of the Nigeria Football Federation, last week, approved the proposal of for two friendly games for the team ahead of the championships but New Telegraph learnt that the NFF chieftains were yet to finalise agreement with potential opponents delaying that until after the draw.
Sources said NFF had entered into negotiations with several countries on the continent but slowed down the process because of the draw. “It’s not true that the NFF has finalised agreement on two international friendlies for Eagles. They are in negotiation with several countries; many have shown interest but it is strategic for the efederation to wait until after the draw because it won’t make any senese to face a side that is in the same group as Nigeria in a friendly few days to the competition.
“I can confirm to you that whichever countries that the Eagles will play against with be top notch sides. They have a played against Egypt, the hosts of AFCON, that was a grade A friendly and we can assure Nigerians the quality of the next ones will be in that category,” a member of staff in the NFF told our correspondent.
