2nd MoC Grand Prix: Adegoke, Nathaniel, Chukwuma others storm Lagos

It will be a star studded championship as top athletes in the country storm Lagos for the second edition of the Making of Champions Grand Prix scheduled for this weekend at the Yaba College of Technology in Lagos State. Top on the list is the Africa U-20 champions, Enoch Adegoke, who will be competing in the 100m and 200m and will be the athlete to beat especially as he has had more 100m races under his belt this year – eight races so far. He also has a faster Season’s Best of 10.29secs, which he ran in Abidjan. In the men’s 400m, a lot will be left on the line, as not only will they be looking to hit the World Championships qualification mark in the 400m, bragging rights will also be at stake.

The match-up in the quarter mile pits together defending National Champions, Samson Nathaniel, National Sports Festival Champions, Orukpe Erayoka, and MoC Grand Prix defending champion, Emmanuel Ojeli. This will be the first time the trio will be meeting since their contest at the NSF six months ago.

With a Personal Best of 44.95secs, Erayokan remains the last Nigerian athlete to run below 45secs, which he achieved at the last African Games in Brazzaville, Congo. Commonwealth Games 4x100m Bronze Medallist, Rosemary Chukwuma, will be making her maiden appearance at the competition, same as National Sports Festival Champions in the men’s 400m Hurdles and women’s High Jump events respectively, David Olowookere and Esther Isa, are also expected to participate in the Grand Prix which comes up on June 15 and 16. Meanwhile, the Athletic Federation of Nigeria has fixed Tuesday June 25 and Wednesday June 26 for the national Open Trials for the 12 African Games scheduled to take place in Rabat, Morocco later in the year. According to a release signed by the secretary of the federation, Elijah Adamu, the trials will take place at the newly renamed MKO Abiola Stadium Abuja, with the athletes expected to arrive on June 24.
