With the Athletic Federation of Nigeria National Trials around the corner, it was a great moment for the home-based athletes coming together at the second edition of the Making of Champions Grand Prix at the Yabatech Sports Complex, Lagos on Sunday.

The two-day meet started on Saturday with the athletes defying the rain to compete with some of them targeting the qualifying standards for the IAAF World Championships.

Enoch Adegoke and Rosemary Chukwuma were the star attractions on day one as they won the 100m for men and women, with Adegoke achieving a new Personal Best.

Despite the rain, Adegoke still clocked a PB and Meet Record of 10.12secs (+1.1m/secs) to win the men’s 100m, claiming the title and meeting record from defending champion Emmanuel Arowolo. Alaba Akintola who also clocked a PB of 10.35secs finished second with defending champion Arowolo achieving a Season’s Best of 10.38ecs for the third position. Chukwuma was no less impressive in the women’s 100m final.

The recently crowned African junior champion put up an impressive show for the cheering crowd as she clocked a SB of 11.44secs for the win, while Joy Udo-Gabriel ran a SB of 11.52secs for second place. Defending champion, Mercy Ntia-Obong, came third in 11.59secs.

Chukwuma also won the women’s 200m final. National Sports Festival champion in women 400m, Imaobong Nse Uko, continued from where she stopped as she coasted home in 54.47secs despite a late surge from Deborah Adewale who took second position. Blessing Oladoye won the bronze medal.
