I’m worried about rising rate of suicide among our youths –Catholic Archbishop

Against the backdrop of this year’s communications week observed annually by the Catholic Church worldwide, the Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, His Eminence Dr. Alfred Adewale Martins, takes a look at insecurity in the country, rising rate of suicide among youths, controversy over proposed Fulani radio station, social media influences and role of media practitioners, in this interview with Tai Anyamwu

What are your reflections on this year’s edition of the World Communications Week of the Catholic Church, themed ‘We Are Members One of One Another’?

The message of the Holy Father (Pope Francis} in recent times have been short, precise, to the point and it calls our attention always to very important issues that concerns communications and the welfare of people as well as common good. We are delighted that this year he has called our attention to the value of social network, asking that we should go from social network communities to the human community, knowing full well that social network community good, as they are and important as they are and as useful as they are, they do not and cannot and should replace the human community. This is because it is in the human community that we feel, see, touch and can experience emotions and therefore have a value which cannot be replaced by social network communities. That understanding is what I have seen clearly in the message of our holy father and as it were bringing to our awareness some of the dangers or some of the challenges that arise from social media communications or social media networks. I’m glad that we are here together to reflect on these things. One thing that struck me strongly is the passage of the scripture that he presented to us as the bases for his reflection: “we are members one of one another.” That says a lot to me because it also reflects in fact a little of all as I mentioned during the Mass on Christian unity and unity of the nation. If we are members of one another apart from the social network communities and the general human network community, there is also the community of Christian believers, communities of those who believe in Christ.
There are not as much communities as we would like to be. But we are chasing after Christ’s faith. I think that should be an encouragement to us to work towards Christian unity. Much as it will also challenge us to look at the fact that in our nation that God has united us, as it is, to be like one nation; and that indeed, there are challenges and conflicts at this point in time which really strikes at the basses of our nationhood, the message of the holy father, in my own estimation goes beyond the idea of social network communities but also these dimensions of being one members of one another. So I hope that our reflections, as members of the media, will go in these directions so that the message can have not only an impact in the hearts and minds of people but perhaps in dealing with our situations in terms of religion and our nationhood.

The nation is still grappling with the issue of insecurity. What do you think should be the role of the media in this regard?

Anyone, who wakes up any day to read newspapers will attest to the fact that insecurity is a major problem in our nation. Some have attributed it to the so-called terrorists; others attributed it to those who are simply criminals, robbers, and kidnappers and so on and so forth. In my own estimation, it is important that the media need to report these events. I know that some have said that when the media focuses on the incidents it creates tension. But on the other hand, if they are not reported, naturally the truth of the matter will not be known to the people. I think also that, apart from reporting them and making known the level of insecurity that is there, it is also important that we have thorough analysis of why insecurity is there in our nation; analysis derived from proper study and research. It will help to ensure that reporting does not just simply put facts across, but will also put reasons why they are there; and perhaps reflect recommendations for overcoming the insecurity. I believe, for instance, it should also call attention of government from time to time to whatever it is that may be responsible either by commission or act of omission on the part of government for the insecurities that we are experiencing. All of these are very important if the media will do service to the nation. As far as these insecurities are concerned, the media should not just report the facts, but also analyse the issues behind the facts, report what government ought to be doing and if it is failing, the areas of failure that needs to be worked on. I believe this should help our nation a lot more and ensure that things will go on well.

The issue of Fulani radio comes to mind. Do you think that government is right in establishing a radio for Fulani herdsmen in spite of the atrocities, allegations that have been leveled against this group?

I personally was taken aback when I heard that government has a plan of establishing a radio station, specifically for Fulani herdsmen. I am sure that they must have some rational for proposing to establish such a radio station. But whatever the rational is, I think it should be put side by side with the situation of our country in which there are already fears of what the former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, referred to as Fulanisation of Nigeria. That will be a matter of being sensitive to even put that side by side with the whole thought of establishing a Fulani radio station. In any case, the timing of bring that project to notice gives a wrong impression to many people. This was about the time of swearing-in of the President for his second tenure. It was immediately after these, he was on his way to attend the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Conference (OIC).These two things put together in the state of our nation today will definitely bring about suspicion. It is going to bring about fear of Islamisation that people are talking about. I believe that the whole issue of mistrust began when former President Ibrahim Babangida, brought us into OIC, an organization that is supposed to be for Islamic countries, at a point in time when Nigeria is supposed to be a secular state. They told us that we are observer status; suddenly it does seem that we have become a permanent member such that that our President, immediately after his swearing-in, will go and attend their meeting. It leaves a lot for the imagination of people to run. I think that it is not a good idea at this point in the life of our nation. In any case, many radio stations that are already in existence, broadcast in different languages. If that is the case, why must the Fulani one be different? It just gives pep to the whole idea of Islamisation that is being put out there. Besides, is it the case that whenever a group of people creates a bit of problem, we must create a radio station to address the problem that is created. These are the issues that arise and I think our government should really think critically about all of this. That idea, for me, is not a wise one.

During the last election, we saw all manners of fake messages mostly coming from highly place sources in government. What is your perspective in this regard and what is your charge to them?

What we know is that election time is a moment when politicians do and say anything and almost everything as long as it helps their political ambition. That is the thing behind that; it even happens not only in Nigeria; but everywhere in the world. I don’t know how media practitioners are going to try and verify such news items. The fact that that something is said or happened does not mean that it is right. It is wrong for anybody to peddle fake news. In fact, the holy Father referred to it in a someway in his message, that fake news helps to drive us farther apart than bring us together as a community of people. Politicians need to be careful so that the kind of news that they push out at election time and any other time is such that will not bring problems to the nation. I will also ask that media practitioners should also go a step further in order to verify that whatever it is they put out. When it comes to politicians at election time, then we must do a triple check than any other time.

Currently the Catholic Church is facing many difficulties, especially because of social media reports and the activities of Pentecostal churches. What is your advice to the Catholic faithful?

The social media is such that anything and everything goes out almost immediately as it is happening, both the fake and the genuine ones. So one can only ask that those who receive such news and Catholics in particular, should be weary and cautious in their reactions to what they received from the social media. It is important that they refer to whoever is in a position to give information about whatever it is that they have received. If the information is about the church in Maiduguri, for instance, it will be important to reach out to the Director of Social Communication in Maiduguri or to even the Bishop there. It is important that we do not just latch on whatever it is that comes out there. Catholics, especially, should realise that there are people out there who have one biff or the other against the church; sometimes because of the principles that we hold. Hence, anybody who received such information should also check it out and see to the truth of it before going ahead. That’s what I would advise Catholics who face this challenge that we are talking about   from social media. The activities of the Pentecostals should only be for us a challenge to deepen more knowledge of our faith; it should be a challenge to understand more the bases of whatever it is that we believe. If there is adequate understanding and knowledge, if there is adequate commitment to the faith, it doesn’t matter whatever anybody says. In fact, when you have a full information and knowledge of your faith you are in a position to even explain to whoever that says this or that about our faith. I really am not worried about Pentecostals but I rather worry about Catholics who do not have adequate understanding of their faith and who do not have adequate opportunity or adequate commitment to be able to stand strong as to whatever we hold on to as a church. I think that associations within the Catholic Church should take it up as a responsibility, to provide opportunity for leading or helping the Catholics to understand our faith better and live by it day to day. If that is done any other person can do whatever he or she wishes.

There is an increasing rate of suicide in the country, especially, among the young people. What is your advice to these people in this regard?

Honestly, I am truly worried about that. I am truly, truly, truly worried because every day you open the newspaper that’s what you read; when you listen to news that’s what you hear. And the excuse often times is ‘Oh! I have this difficulty, sometimes I didn’t pass my exams. At other time, I don’t have a job.’ They are excuses that obviously that provide stress for people. But I believe that our young people should not simply absorb whatever it is that comes to them. They need to speak to those who can truly counsel them; they need to reach out to those who are older and more experienced to help them to put things in true perspectives. I believe that when a problem is so close to one’s face, he cannot see it in due perspectives. But by the time they discuss it with another person that has other experiences, young people will now be able to see things in due perspective. I just need to tell our young people, do not keep your problem to your own heart alone. Share it with whoever you can trust, who will be able to assist you and counsel you. Secondly, know that no matter whatever problem you are going through, you are not the only one that is going through problems.

Others are going through problems, yours may be different. It is when they are patient enough to try and find solutions to the problems that they will outlive the problems. If you allow the problem to shut you out of this world, you obviously would have taken a live that is in your own custody because all lives belong to God. If we have life, it because God gave it us, we have no right to take life. I think that it is important for our youths to recognize that aspect as well. Life belongs to God and it is sacred, you cannot take it just because you feel depressed today. Supposed you are able to live till tomorrow and you are not depressed any more, wouldn’t it be already too late? So young people, indeed not only young people, everyone should be able to look beyond the problem of today and see that God in His own wisdom provides and indeed helps us in our difficult situations. I ask that our young people should please not take their lives in that way; but rather let God be part and parcel of their considerations. As far as youths in the church are concerned, anyone who takes his or her life has just given themselves a visa to hell, damnation and eternal death.

CAN kicks as Kaduna moves to evict 110-year-old church

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has raised the alarm over a seven-day quit notice issued to St. Gregory’s Anglican Church (pictured), Sabon Gari, Zaria, by the Kaduna State Urban Planning Development Agency (KASUPDA).

In the notice seen by TheCable, the agency said the failure to comply with the directive will lead to the forceful eviction of the church. “Reference to the directive given by the Executive Governor on the issue of Market development which compensation has been duly paid, you are hereby directed to vacate your residence within Seven (7) days from now, failure to comply will leave the Agency with no option than to evict you at your own expense. (from 19h – 24 September),” the statement read. The zonal head of the agency, who signed the notice on behalf of the zonal manager, did not include his name.

Reacting to the development, Joseph Hayab, chairman of CAN in Kaduna, said the association is alarmed over the quit notice. “CAN wishes to draw the attention of the Kaduna state government to a quit notice to St. George’s Anglican Church in Sabon Gari, Zaria,” he said in a statement.

“The seven-day quit notice by the Kaduna State Urban Planning Development Agency (KASUPDA), is purported to be a directive from the executive governor. “The notice also claimed that compensation had been duly paid to the church.

We are alarmed and apprehensive about this if it is true that it is a directive from the governor. But we doubt much if the governor issued the directive.”

Hayab said the state government made moves to relocate the church over the expansion of the market at Sabon Gari in February 2016 but later realised that the church had all valid documents and that even some parts of the market are on the church’s land. Hayab said following the presentation of the necessary documents by the church, the matter was resolved amicably. He called on the governor to immediately investigate the quit notice from KASUPDA and take prompt action.

”This will go a long way in allaying fears and apprehension among Christians in the state and the nation at large,” he said. “This unfortunate notice is coming just a few weeks after the alarm about the purported demolition of a mosque in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, which, upon investigations, was later confirmed to be false. We urge the governor to take a step to avert that kind of situation in Kaduna.” Muyiwa Adekeye, spokesman of Nasir el-Rufai, the governor, said he was not aware of the notice.

“I am not aware of the notice you are talking about. What I know, and is a fact that is very much in the public domain, it is that the Kaduna State government is redeveloping and expanding markets, including the Sabon-Gari market” Adekeye said via a text message. No official of KASUPDA could be reached for comments as of the time this report was filed

Beware of the “third parent”

Beware of the “third parent”

MEMORISE:

Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.

1 Corinthians 15:33

READ: 2 Samuel 13:1-15, 2 Samuel 13:25-29

MESSAGE:

The influence of peer groups has always been great in moulding a person’s character either for good or bad.

Indeed, friends and peer groups are the “third parent” to every individual. Peer pressure has the power of enticing a person into things they would never have considered doing. No wonder the Holy Spirit says in Proverbs 1:10:

“My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.”

Yo entice is to persuade a person to carry out an act, usually by offering something pleasant and attractive as dividend. An example of this is the serpent’s dangling of the forbidden fruit before Eve (Genesis 3:6). Enticement usually works hand in hand with deception.

May you never fall victim to the enticement of the world like Demas did in Jesus’ Name (2 Timothy 4:10).

The power of temptation lies in its ability to entice its victim. Parents do not lure their children into temptation; rather, they lead their children on the path of greatness and right living.

The Holy Spirit in our lives represents our divine parents, the Holy Trinity, and this is why we must always listen to the counsel He gives and reject any counsel contrary to His inspired word. The truth is, the Holy Spirit cannot lead you to do anything that is contrary to God’s written word. Speaking on His mandate, our Lord said in John 16:13:

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.”

He then went on to say in John 17:17:

“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”

In other words, the Holy Spirit is to guide us into all of God’s word, which is truth.

Associating with evil people has the potential to corrupt any person of good character. That is why the Holy Spirit is sending the warning in today’s memory verse.

Those who are wise will give heed to what the Holy Spirit says because He knows more than we know and sees better than we see.

To avoid the snare of wicked peers and finish your race in heaven, let the Holy Spirit have the greatest influence on you. Do not keep friends like Jonadab in today’s Bible reading, whose advice cost Amnon his life.

Jonadab and Amnon were even cousins! Irrespective of family links, don’t allow anyone influence you into destruction, because when it’s all said and done, you will bear your cross yourself.

May the Lord make you wise concerning this in Jesus’ Name.

ACTION POINT:

Examine if the company you keep influences you for good and adds value to you. Discreetly withdraw from those who influence you negatively.

The everlasting treasure

The everlasting treasure

B

ut the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and His righteousness unto children’s children –Psalm103:17. Once God’s mercy is extended, it does not expire God’s mercy never fades. It never loses efficacy or effectiveness. The mercy of God is the greatest treasure any person can possess. When the treasure of God’s mercy, is obtained, every other treasure is attracted, magnetized, restrained and sustained. The mercy of God as a treasure is beyond human or demonic corruption. It is beyond the reach of Moth and Roth.

The mercy of God is truly a long and lasting treasure to His people. The word of God declares that it will continue longer than their lives. If anyone is privileged to be a recipient or a beneficiary of this great treasure, it shall endure forever, and will survive your present state, circumstances or situation no matter what it may be. The description of those to whom his mercy belongs is such as fear God. To fear God basically is to hate and eschew sin and evil. Thus the word of God declares: “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil, pride and arrogance and evil way and the forward mouth do I hate –Proverbs 8:13.

Conditionally, the beneficiaries of these everlasting mercies must be people that lives a life if faith and keeps God’s covenant.

They hold unto the covenant of God tenaciously in faith never ready to compromise any part of it. They are to keep their side of the covenant with God as a treasure, whereof the longevity of God’s mercy upon their lives is divinely elongated even to their children’s children. These are the people that live the life of obedience to the provision of the word of God and also remember the commandments of God to do them. Unto these beneficiaries of God’s mercies, they shall have these mercies forever; it shall have a generational effect. Even death itself is incapable of constituting an abridgement to this eternal and generational bliss.

God’s mercy is better than life, for it will outlive life itself. Also, to their soul, which has become immortal, God’s mercy is still from everlasting to everlasting. From everlasting in the council and inception of it, to everlasting in consequence of it; in the election before the world were election and their glorification when the world shall be no more. For they are predestined to the inheritance, this was why the word of God declares: “In whom also we have obtained an inheritance being predestined according to the purpose of Him who worketh all things after the council of His own will” –Ephesians 1:11.

They looked and hoped for the ultimate mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life in God’s kingdom. Their seed shall also be preserved in mercy unto the end of the world. Hence the word of God said thus: “The children of thy servants shall continue, and their seed, shall be established before thee” – Psalm 102;28.

Engaging the mystery of tithing for financial fortune

Engaging the mystery of tithing for financial fortune

W

elcome to another impactful week. I hope you were blessed by last week teaching. Today, we shall focus on: Engaging the Mystery of Tithing for Financial Fortune!

From scriptures, we understand that God’s prosperity plan is a covenant, not a promise; that is, we cannot fast or pray our way into it. There is a part we must play before we can commit God to do His part. Therefore, until our part of the covenant is fulfilled, we cannot commit God to bless us. As it is written, But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day (Deuteronomy 8:18). From the above scripture, God has a covenant in place that empowers us into realms of financial fortune. It is not the doctrine of a church but His covenant.

Also, note that God’s covenant of financial prosperity is as binding as His covenant of day and night (Genesis 8:22; Jeremiah 33:20-21). As long as the covenant of the day and night is in place, God’s covenant of abundance remains in force. It is, therefore, an ever reliable and dependable covenant. We must understand that the giving covenant is as much a New Testament phenomenon as it is the Old Testament covenant.  As it is written, Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only. But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:15, 19). But giving does not only meet our financial needs, it meets all other needs. While the giving covenant has so many channels such as worship offering, giving to the poor, giving to parents etc., we discover that the anchor channel of this covenant is TITHING.

What Then, Is Tithe?

Tithe is the tenth of our increase or income. It is our covenant acknowledgment of God’s blessings in our lives that entitles us to continuous flow of same (Malachi 3:10). Tithe is also God’s portion that makes the remainder meaningful. It is tithe that gives value to other avenues of giving. When we stop tithing, we stop the flow of God’s blessings. This is why we must understand that tithing is not a church doctrine; it is a law of the Kingdom that launches the believer into realms of financial fortune. Tithing is God’s principal term of the covenant of abundance (Malachi 3:8-11). It is the law of the Spirit that launches us into realms of financial fortune, which is part of the provisions of redemption (2 Corinthians 8:9). Thus, tithing is ordained to make rich and grant us access to our wealthy place in Christ (Psalm 66:10-12; Proverbs 3:9, 10). We can therefore conclude that tithing is a Kingdom mystery that confers us with mastery over finances. It is a covenant obligation for everyone that desires to step into his/her wealthy place in Christ. It is our only guarantee to step into the realms of financial fortune; there is no short cut.

Other Fringe Benefits That Accompany Tithing

·       Averts All Curses, Spells and Enchantments: Tithing averts the curse of the Lord. It is written, Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation (Malachi 3:9). Why? Because the curse of the Lord is in the house of a thief (Zechariah 5:4). The tithe belongs to God and refusing to tithe is viewed as robbery in scriptures. Furthermore, every tither is blessed of the Lord and therefore becomes, ‘uncurseable’ (Numbers 23:8).

·       Protects us Against the Assault of the Devourer: It stops the devourer from attacking our health, families, businesses, career etc (Malachi 3:10-11). Tithers are entitled to health and vitality.

·       Empowers us to live a Debt-free Life: Borrowing may not be a sin, but it is definitely a weight. Tithing is the cheapest way to lay aside indebtedness. With blessings which we do not have enough room to receive being released to us through tithing, there can be no place for borrowing (Malachi 3:10).

·       Divine Ideas: From the windows of heaven, what we have pouring out is rain, which is a symbol of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and its mission among others is to make us of quick understanding (Malachi 3:10-18). This gives us access to divine ideas so that we begin to think at God’s own frequency and command same order of results accordingly. For instance, Abraham the tither pioneered the first cattle ranch business (Genesis 13:1-3). Isaac pioneered the first irrigation farming in scriptures and Jacob the tither pioneered the first animal husbandry business according to Bible history. All tithers have free access to divine ideas that lead the way to their blessings.

·       Guarantees Long Life: Abraham the tither died at 175 (Genesis 25:7), Isaac at 180 (Genesis 35:28) and Jacob was 147 years old (Genesis 47:28). Also, John D. Rockefeller, who started tithing from his first pay cheque and kept at it, became the 1st American Billionaire in history. He had 41 years added to his years after he was told by the doctors that he would not see his 52nd birthday, but he lived to be 93! Tithing entitles us to long life.

In summary, all our covenant fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, were tithers and they gained access to their wealthy places in life (Genesis 14:19-20, 28:22).  Furthermore, redemption connects us to the Abrahamic order of blessings and as a seed of Abraham, every believer is ordained to be a blessing to the world (Galatians 3:29; John 8:39). Although a great future awaits us, we must tithe our way into it like our covenant fathers did. All we need is to receive grace for consistency in our tithing. Tithing will always make a clear difference among believers. This means that financial fortune is impossible without tithing however you must be born again. Are you born again? If you are not, this is an opportunity to do so. Simply say the following prayer: Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Today, I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Thank You, Jesus, for saving me! Now, I know I am born again

Your reinstatement

Your reinstatement

T

he Lord suddenly “woke up” like a person who was in a deep sleep or like a drunk to look at His people, including you and discover that things are not the way they are supposed to be. He could not believe His eyes that some persons are still the way they were last time after ministering on their folders like medical doctors to their clients.

Then the Lord awaked as one out of a sleep, and like a mighty man that shouted by reason of wine (Psalm 78:65).

The Lord shouted at people like a drunk asking some questions pertaining you and your people. The Scripture did not say He was a drunk or asleep, but the way He behaved, one would think whether He was not aware of what was happening, that nothing significant has improved in the lives of His people. He suddenly realised that some persons or demons were responsible, who He called your enemies and death with them to perpetual, everlasting reproach. All those who fought you to stand still – are in trouble. The scripture says that the Holy Spirit fought them from behind, taking them by surprise. They are permanently defeated, no more return match.

The Lord then asked for the king to be brought to Him, and they brought someone else, Ephraim. He shouted like a drunk, who is this? He was told son of Joseph who Jacob adopted, a grandson made to preside over the affairs of his uncles, the 12 sons of Jacob. The Lord shouted, Judah I know, Ephraim, what are you doing there? He rejected Ephraim who was used to exchange Judah. Holy Spirit also rejected Absalom and enthroned David, as He rejected Adonijah and enthroned Solomon.

Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim: But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.  And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he hath established for ever. He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds: (Psalm 78:67,70)

What actually happened? The Lord prepared a throne for you, a position He enthroned you, but somehow, somewhere they brought some persons to take your throne, and the Lord who just “woke” up decided to remove them and placed you where you are supposed to be. He has answered your prayers. he removed the Ephraim, and the Adonijah, and the Absalom, even Aaron that was absent replacing Moses his younger brother. The Lord has reinstated you. The physical manifestations are being arranged. Your problem / challenges are over. Believe me. Believe the Holy Spirit. Things can never be the same again. Expect sudden change. Remember He smote the enemies with perpetual reproach.

“For your shame ye shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them.” (Isaiah 61:7)

In fact, for a portion of shame meted to you, you have double promotion, double testimonies and double celebration is there will be double everlasting joy. You will sing this song.

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels. (Isaiah 61:10)

Demonic attack

Demonic attack

I

think it will interest the believers to learn all they could about demonic attack. These are attacks from witches, wizards and occultic people. They are the people that have demonic powers that give them the ability and capability for extra human activities which some of them use to manipulate the lives of ordinary persons.

Methods of demonic attack

There are many methods of demonic attack and they include Curses, Psychic Projection Manipulation at dreams, Usage of effigies and images, Usage of monitoring spirit, Spiritual poison at dreams, Using Cats, Owls and other animals that harbour demons, Using Rituals among others methods.

The aim and Objectives of the attack is to steal, delay, or reverse destiny through death, sickness, spell, spirit of dishonour, failure, hatred, stagnation etc.

Our joy is the assurance of our Lord Jesus in John 10:10

“The Thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: i am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” (Jon 10:10)

We shall discuss some of these methods of witchcraft attack and how to neutralise them so that we believers can enjoy our liberty in the Lord Jesus. Spiritual attack will therefore come in series in our weekly write ups. If you are under any demonic attack I can assure you that in a matter of few weeks you will be completely delivered.

Demonic attack through curses

The Adamic curse

Adam was destined to live in Eden and enjoy all round blessings forever but he fell into the temptation of those who stole his destiny and brought it to an end. He received the first curse in (Gen 3:17-19)

A curse is a pronouncement that changes life for the worst causes accident, bad luck, death and other negative happenings.

No curse without a cause

“As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come’’. (Proverb 26:2)

Man is endowed with spiritual immunity that protects him from curses but Satan and his agents have the way to lure man into sin that destroys his immunity and make him vulnerable to attack.(Exodus 23:21-22)

This is to say most times, effective curse results from the sin of the victim of the curse or shall we say a curse is a direct repercussion of our sins of action or inaction. An exception to this is the generational curse which is the curse that passes through the bloodline of families, group of people, communities e.t.c

A curse in the African society

That most people are under different manner of curses is a fact. As said earlier, curses remove our spiritual immunity. Most times when we suffer from sicknesses, that normally result from our activities like food we eat or sexual intercourse we had, what actually determines our vulnerability to such sickness is the invasion of our spiritual immunity. We have example of people living under the bridges, drinking the most unhygienic water yet are free from typhoid fever while the one that live in the most hygienic condition may have very terrible bout of typhoid. The reason is that the immunity of the victim of typhoid was broken so he becomes vulnerable to the attack. A situation like this could result from a curse. In Yoruba land, a curse could be physical object usually a concoction known as ‘’Afose’’, loaded into the horn of an animal and wrapped up with red cloth. It harbours demonic spirit upon which invocations are made through incantation that results in the release of a flood of demons that attack the victims as desired. Another concoction with more potent power and ability to curse is called ‘’Olugbohun’’. It is usually placed in the hut outside the house and most times in the farm because of its sensitive nature. It gives strength to prayers and curses said around it.

•We shall discuss other manners of curse from next week.

Prayers is the key

Prayers is the key

T

he book of luke: 18:1 says; “And He spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint.’’

Prayer could simply be explained as a communication between man and God. It is also a channel, or point of contact between man and God.

Beloved, many people today in our society, including believers are facing various challenges as a result of wrong application of solutions to issues. In times of problems and challenges, all we need is prayers. As we pray, God will hear, and give solutions. Hosea 4:6 says ‘’My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shall be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children’’.

Many people have been destroyed as a result of ignorance, lack of knowledge; lack of knowledge of the things of God, lack of knowledge of the ways of God; lack of knowledge of the power of prayers and lack of knowledge of the necessity of prayers.

There is no problem God cannot solve, He can create, and re-create. He has power to do all things. God is the owner of power – [Psalm 62:11]. That being the case, brethren, we must therefore, always be in constant communication with Him. Isaiah chapter 45:22 say “Look unto me, and be yee saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else”

Prayer is the key to God’s gate, whenever we pray; God is always available to answer. No matter the issue, no matter how difficult the problems appear to be, be it personal to the individual, or official, or to the state, or Nation. Prayer is the key, the master key.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, and other great men who did exploits in the bible days were all empowered by the secret power of prayers. Jesus Christ overcame Satan and his manipulations by the power of prayers. He performed miracles of deliverance, and healings. He defeated the Sadducees, the Pharisees, and the defiant Jews by the power of prayers -Mathew 26:36-44; John 11:41-42.

Apostle Paul overcame the forty vagabond Jews who had bound themselves together in oath that they would neither eat nor drink till they see his death. He overcame all the defiant Jews, his Roman accusers, the Sanhedrin, and all his accusers. He did great exploits in Rome, and other Asian countries. All these were as a result of commitment to prayers -2corinthians 1:2-4.

Hezekiah was a man sick unto death. God has already approved his death, and only sent prophet Isaiah to go and pass the message to him. On receiving the message, Hezekiah did not go grumbling, or murmuring. He did not resign to fate. He rather, was undaunted, and went to meet God in prayers. And presented, and argued his case on why he should not die yet. By the time he was through with his prayers, God saw merit in his argument. Cancelled his death sentence, and added another fifteen years to his life span.

Even nations and states have need for prayers. And many of them do pray. The children of Israel usually resort to prayers in days of Old Testament. In the face of danger, or threats from any of their enemy nations, they run to God in prayers. God will hear, deliver, and give them victory. That was the secret of their invincibility among other nations.

Firm parenting and harsh parenting

Firm parenting and harsh parenting

A

s a daddy, you can be firm without being harsh. The dictionary defines harsh as “unpleasantly stern, rough”. It defines the word harshly as “in a harsh or unkind manner”. Take note of the words “unpleasantly stern, rough, unkind manner”. Being harsh on your children or wife therefore means that you are being unpleasantly stern; you are being rough, and that you are behaving in an unkind manner.

Being firm on the other hand means being steadfast, determined, unwavering. Daddying in harsh way is like fathering without love. It is like fathering without caring for the feelings of your child. It’s like fathering in anger. Children are very sensitive. They know when you are correcting them in anger, in a rough manner or in an unkind manner.

They also know when you are fathering or correcting them in love even if you refuse to bend to their ways. Unfortunately, many daddies are harsh. A twenty-year-old boy once told me that one of his parents did not love him as I was trying to settle a dispute within the family. Upon hearing this, the parent screamed and said words like, “Look at this bad boy. Who told you that I do not love you? If I did not love you, would I have been making all these financial sacrifices for you?” The boy looked at me and said “Didn’t I tell you that I am not loved?

In another case, another twenty-year-old boy who wanted to have his way was told by his daddy in a firm, but loving manner words like; “I am your daddy and I love you but as far as this very matter is concerned, I will never allow you have your way. If I do, you will harm yourself and I will hate to see you suffer.” The son willingly complied. This is an example of a father who is firm and kind.

The firm but kind father won the war and the peace, but the harsh father won the war without winning the peace.

No child enjoys being spoken to as an enemy.

In an average family, family members have one form of impression about each other. It may surprise some parents to know that some children know that what they are doing is bad but the problem is that their parents do not give them the opportunity to repent. This is so because the parents are always reminding them of how bad they are or the bad things they are doing or have done in the past. For example, when a father keeps saying, “You always tell lies. You are a liar”. A child will interpret such to mean that even if he or she

tells the truth the parents will never believe him/her. They think their parents will never give them the opportunity to change. This gets some more hardened while it makes others submit because of fear.  Because children love strong characters, many will respect their parents more if such a parent is firm but not harsh. Be very kind but firm on drawing the line between acceptable and non-acceptable behaviour. Love you.
