To solve numerous environmental challenges facing Imo State, government must develop a comprehensive Environmental Management Plan (EMP). An environmental expert and senior lecturer in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management, Imo State University, Owerri, Dr. Okechi Dominic Azuwike, said this in a paper he presented as a guest lecturer at an event held by the state Ministry of Petroleum and Environment to evaluate the 2019 World Environment Day in Owerri. Azuwike said lack of environmental management plan by institutions and even government had led to increasing environmental degradation and its attendant consequences on human lives.

In the paper entitled; “Air Pollution Global Scourge: The situation in Imo State,” the lecturer said that going by the identified problematic scenarios in the state, a comprehensive solution to air pollution was the development and implementation of EMP. He described pollution as change in the physical, chemical, biological state Imo must design environmental crises roadmap –Lecturer of the environment or a part of it to the extent that such change renders the affected environment incapable of sustaining its full functionality. According to him, when and where there is no proper articulation on what to do with waste, burning becomes a form of remedial agency, albeit a very poor and ingenuous one. He said:

“Most institutions and agencies in Imo State do not have EMPs. Where there is an understanding built into the management system, it may not suffice if there is no codified document spelling out how the environment has to be managed. Every market for instance has to have a blueprint which spells out how waste is managed as part of Management Information System. “All tertiary institutions of higher learning, hospitals, churches and other bodies have to produce such documents through experts to guide their operations along the lines of best practice. “The absence of EMPs has been a serious challenge. Not understanding organisational position in refuse and corporate culture resulting from absence of EMP will result to burning of waste in open fires and other poor practices.
