Adegoke, Arowolo shine at Cameroon Grand Prix

I

t was another impressive performance by African junior champion, Enoch Adegoke, as he ran a new personal best to win the men’s 100m at the 2019 Cameroon Grand Prix.

The Obafemi Awolowo University undergraduate finished the race in 10.15 seconds as he smashed his previous record of PB of 10.19 seconds. His season’s best was 10.29 seconds.

Though he has gone faster this season after winning the MoC Grand Prix in a supposed PB of 10.12secs, this time is yet to be officially registered by the IAAF which gives doubts on its validity.

Adegoke’s brilliant performance in Cameroon confirms Nigeria now has five athletes that have gone under the 10.15secs mark, with three already hitting the IAAF World Championship standard of 10.10secs.

Also shining at the Grand Prix was Emmanuel Arowolo, who won the men’s 200m with a new PB of his own, winning the race in 20.37secs, to put to the past his previous PB of 20.84secs and qualifying for the World Championships.

Obama’s high school basketball jersey nets $120,000 at auction

President Barack Obama’s game-worn high school basketball jersey went up for auction in Dallasover the weekend.
The winning bid: $120,000, by a buyer who wanted to remain anonymous.
Obama wore the jersey during his senior year at Punahou School in Honolulu as a member of the 1979 Hawaii State Champion boys’ varsity basketball team.
Obama is a well-known hoops fan, and he was known to host pickup games while in office. He’s sat courtside at a number of NBA games, and he was even in attendance when Duke University phenom Zion Williamson’s shoe burst during a game against the University of North Carolina in February.
The jersey might have been discarded if not for fellow Punahou alum Peter Noble. Noble was three years Obama’s junior and wore the same No. 23 as a member of the junior varsity team.
Noble did not realize that the jersey belonged to Obama until the latter was elected President and he saw in a Sports Illustrated article that he had worn 23.
Included in the lot is a letter of provenance from Noble and his 1979 Punahou School yearbook. A portion of the proceeds will go to the school.
Eric Bradley, a spokesman for Heritage Auctions, said bidding was extremely competitive, with the lot receiving 27 bids, far above the seven or eight bids most lots receive.
The jersey’s price bested the winning bid for a dual signed photograph of baseball legends Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth, the only one of its kind known to exist. That lot sold for $111,000, and the auction house had expected it to be the top bid in the auction, reports CNN.

NFF speaks on FIFA Ethics Committee decision on Siasia

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has disclosed that its lawyers have started to review the decision against former Nigeria player and coach Samson Siasia by the FIFA Ethics Committee, which on Friday announced that it had placed a life ban from all football-related activities on Siasia.
Acting President of the Federation, Barrister Seyi Akinwunmi, himself a lawyer of more than three decades at the bar, said on Monday that the Federation had already reached out to the former U20, U23 and Super Eagles head coach and is aware that he is receiving appropriate legal advice.
“The NFF was shocked to learn of the investigation and subsequent decision by the FIFA Ethics Committee (Adjudicatory Chamber) placing a life ban on Mr. Samson Siasia. But we have, however, now received documents, including one known as the Motivated Decision, and we have handed them to our lawyers to study and provide legal advice to the Federation.
“It is a massive sanction on one of our legends. Siasia is a fooball legend but most importantly he is a Nigerian. We must therefore be interested in the matter and be properly advised.”
Akinwunmi added: “Siasia gave his all for Nigeria, playing for the U20 team right from his secondary school days and then for the senior team for several years, and also coaching the U20 and U23 teams and the Super Eagles. While we respect the FIFA processes and appreciate that an investigation was conducted prior to the decision, the least we as a Federation can do is empathise with him at this time, make ourselves available to him and hope that in some way he is able to clear his name as he has promised to do.”

Bayern complete Coutinho loan deal

Bayern Munich have signed attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona on a season-long loan deal which includes an option to buy.

Barcelona say the German side will pay 8.5m euros (£7.78m) to take the Brazilian, 27, on loan while the option to buy stands at 120m euros (£109.84m).

Bayern will also pay Coutinho’s wages for the duration of the loan spell.

“For me, this change represents a new challenge in a new country at one of the best clubs in Europe,” he said.

“I am really looking forward to this. I have big goals, like Bayern, and I’m sure I can do it with my new team-mates. ”

Bayern Chief Executive, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge added: “We have been working with Philippe Coutinho for some time and are very happy that we were able to realise this transfer now.

“Our thanks to FC Barcelona for agreeing to this transfer. In Philippe, a player comes to FC Bayern who will strengthen our offensive with his creativity and excellent technique.”

Coutinho, who was in the crowd for Barcelona’s La Liga defeat against Athletic Bilbao on Friday, joined from Liverpool in a £142m deal in January 2018, reports the BBC.

Despite scoring 21 goals in 76 appearances for the Spanish giants, he has fallen short of expectations and had been linked with several clubs this summer.

It is believed he was included as part of a bid by Barcelona to re-sign Neymar from Paris St-Germain, the Spanish club reportedly willing to offer 100m euros (£92.4m) plus Coutinho for the forward.

Tottenham ended their interest in a loan deal for Coutinho earlier this month, while he was also linked with moves to Arsenal and back to Liverpool.

Pogba will stay at Man United, Ole insists

Pogba will stay at Man United, Ole insists

Ole Gunnar Solskjær has insisted Paul Pogba will remain at Manchester United once the Spanish and Italian transfer windows close early next month.

Real Madrid and Juventus each retain an interest in the midfielder and could sign him until September 2, when their respective markets close. Pogba called his future into doubt once more after last week’s 4-0 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford by saying a “question mark remains”.

When asked about Pogba staying at United, Solskjær was emphatic after first seeming to correct himself. “Unless some – for me, yeah he’s going to stay,” he said. Expanding further in regards to Pogba’s comments last week, Solskjær said: “You always put question marks around Paul. I don’t think it’s odd [him] saying I have fun with my teammates, I enjoy what I’m doing, I love my job and enjoy the game.

“Of course that sentence with the question mark about him, there’s always question marks about Paul. There’s not one press conference that I’ve not answered a question about Paul Pogba – 80% of what he said was that he enjoyed that game and his time here.”

Pressed regarding the other 20% Solskjær said: “That’s the question mark. Is he questioning you or are you putting question marks on him? I’ve got absolutely no concerns on Paul.”

Solskjær takes United to Wolves on Monday evening hoping for a different result from the 2-1 league and FA Cup defeats his side suffered there last season, reports The Guardian.

Harry Maguire made an impressive debut for United against Chelsea, forming what looks a promising centre-back partnership with Victor Lindelöf.

“We want the partnership to develop with David [De Gea] at the back. We want to play out from the back but we’ve got good centre-backs around as well,” Solskjær said. “I hope Victor and Harry don’t give me a reason to change.”

Life ban: FIFA unfair to Siasia, says Ezeugo

C

oach Samson Siasia’s teammate in the Super Eagles’ squad of 1994 that won the Africa Cup of Nations and debuted at the world Cup, Emeka Ezeugo,  has written on his facebook platform that the World soccer governing body FIFA was not fair in its decision to ban his colleague for life.

Siasia was banned for life by FIFA on Friday over allegations of match fixing and bribery and Ezeugo believes the body is unfair in its judgement.

Ezeugo said the former Eagles coach should be considered innocent until proven guilty beyond all reasonable doubt, which he insists has not been done, as he did not get the chance of making his defence.

He said unless FIFA provides better information and details about the incidents in which Siasia was found culpable, it could be assumed that the global body has erred in a case of mistaken identity.

Ezeugo queried : “Is FIFA that dumb; that a football official of such repute could be convicted without a representation in the trial?”

Siasia has said he had never been invited to defend himself and was hearing about this for the first time and will fight to clear his name.

“He only saw the news in his email after reading and hearing it from the public domain according to his associate Prince Opukiri Jones-Ere.

“The report from Zurich, Switzerland stated in part: “The adjudicatory chamber of the independent Ethics Committee has found Mr Samson Siasia, a former official of the Nigeria Football Federation, guilty of having accepted that he would receive bribes in relation to the manipulation of matches in violation of the FIFA Code of Ethics.

“The formal ethics proceedings against Mr Siasia were initiated on 11 February 2019 and stem from an extensive investigation into matches that Mr Wilson Raj Perumal attempted to manipulate for betting purposes. This large-scale investigation was conducted by FIFA via its competent departments and in cooperation with the relevant stakeholders and authorities.

“In its decision, the adjudicatory chamber found that Mr Siasia had breached art. 11 (Bribery) of the 2009 edition of the FIFA Code of Ethics and banned him for life from all football-related activities (administrative, sports or any other) at both national and international level. In addition, a fine in the amount of CHF 50,000 has  been imposed on Mr. Siasia.”

D’Tigress retain Afrobasket championship title

N

igeria’s national team D’Tigress on Sunday retained the FIBA Women Afrobasket Championship after they defeated hosts Senegal 60-55 points in the final.

The Nigerian lasses were the defending champions going into the championship and never disappointed as they became the first team to win back-to-back FIBA Women’s AfroBasket titles since Angola followed up their 2011 triumph with another in 2013.

It was a hard-fought battle for the Nigerians as they survived a late onslaught from the hosts who were close to snatching the victory from them with a late rally.

The champions opened the game outstandingly as they won the first quarter 14-10 and followed that up with another 18-14 in the second quarter.

They won the third quarter 16-13 but were shocked to see their opponents raced to early lead in the last quarter. The Senegalese won the quarter 18-12 but the Nigerians held on to end the game 60-55.

Evelyn Akhator was again the biggest contributor as she hit  14 points. Promise Amukamara and Ezinne Kalu were the other players with double digits as they slammed 12 and 13 points respectively.
