Liadi to FG: Ban Naira Marley’s masturbation dance,‘Soapy’

Celebrated, award winning Nigerian dancer and the immediate past president of Guild of Nigerian Dancers (GOND), Adedayo Liadi, who is the founder/director of Ijodee Arts, has condemned the controversial masturbation dance, ‘Soapy’ by Nigerian singer, Afeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley. The dance step, which is done by imitating the act of masturbation, was demonstrated in a video posted by Naira Marley last week.

The video which has gone viral since it was posted online by Naira Marley last week has received series of condemnations. Reacting to the ‘Soapy dance’, Liadi in a chat with journalists at Freedom Park Lagos, expressed shock, stressing that the dance is erotic and should not be seen by children. “I am not happy seeing people that call themselves professional dancers doing errotic movements, later kids will learn it and begin to practice same dance.

“I stand with Nigerian dancer Kafayat Shafau-Ameh, popularly known as Kaffy, in condemning such dance. “This kind of dance is condemned by Nigerian dancers. “I have nothing against Naira Marley or his kind of music, my concern is the soapy dance he posted and has gone viral.” According to Liadi, even though they want to do such dance, “they can do it in the club.

That is why we have the club”. “But to put such an erotic movement online as a trending dance is not acceptable to us. Is that the kind of dance they want children to dance to? And I learnt that some children have started dancing it. I want government regulatory agencies to ban the dance.”

Been wondering the exact message in that dance but found no message, I belief dance is done within a particular space and time, to pass a positive message to everyone that sees it and not the other way. The soapy erotic dance step video must as a matter of urgency be discontinued by the appropriate authorities, as this have started sending negative vibes to all especial the underaged children. My advise to dancers goes thus, let’s do the right thing and give dance the true meaning, and not just for the money aspect but for the true positive aspect of dance.
