Akpeyi fears losing Eagles spot

Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi is bothered about the possibility of losing his place in the national due to limited playing time at his South African side Kaiser Chiefs.

The glovesman’s chances have been limited following the return to fitness of Chiefs’ number one Itumeleng Khune.

Akpeyi had held on for the legendary goalie but the Nigerian may have to revert to his back-up role and he has now explained his fears of losing his number one spot as the Super Eagles number one, adding he hopes the coaches will understand the dynamics at his club even if he is not playing regular football.

“Sometimes this game can be tricky but when you have someone who understands the dynamics of this game, who understands how things run,” continued the lanky keeper.

“I am in a team where I will not be playing 100% of games. That should be understood because there is no way that I can push Khune aside no matter if he is on form or not, he has this background that it would be difficult for you to push him out, I am just being honest about it,” noted the 33-year-old.

“But for whoever is the head [coach of Nigeria] as long as he understands the dynamics and how things work, as long as I am injury-free and doing my best here and the report gets to them it will be up to them to decide if they want to give me a chance and still believe I can make it work with the national team,” he said.

Pep Guardiola’s wife returns to Spain

Pep Guardiola’s wife has gone back to live in Spain – but Manchester City have no fears about losing their record-breaking manager.

Sunday Mirror Sport understands that Guardiola’s spouse, Cristina, has returned to Barcelona with one of the couple’s three children to look after her business interests.

Mrs Guardiola owns a successful fashion company in Catalonia and has been managing the enterprise by commuting regularly from Manchester for the last three years.

But the plan is for her to base herself in Barcelona for the next few months before returning permanently to the luxury city-centre apartment that has become home to the Guardiola family.

The arrangement means husband Pep will take care of the couple’s other two kids – as well as masterminding his club’s bid for a third successive Premier League title and Champions League glory.

Etihad sources have confirmed that Guardiola remains fully committed to his £20million-a-year job.

The 48-year-old former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss is in his fourth season at City and is contracted to the club until 2022 after signing an extension in May last year.

The deal was announced just days after he led the Blues to a record-breaking 100-point title triumph as well as lifting the Carabao Cup.

City then became the first club to lift a domestic treble last season by defending both trophies before adding the FA Cup to the collection.

Guardiola met his wife when she was working in her family’s exclusive clothes boutique in Barcelona.

He was playing for Barca at the time but visited the shop after being asked to do some modelling for designer Antonio Miro.

They married in May 2014 and have three children, Marius, Maria and Valentina.

Ole: Pogba is at Man United for the long haul

Ole Gunnar Solskjær has admitted speculation is always likely to surround Paul Pogba’s future for as long as the France midfielder remains at Manchester United but is confident any further overtures from Real Madrid can be repulsed in January. United’s manager also believes a top-four finish is not beyond his side this season.

Zinedine Zidane is under pressure at the Bernabéu because of poor results, rather than his failure to sign his main transfer target in the summer, though Real Madrid’s president, Florentino Pérez, still appears to believe a move is possible later in the season. However, Solskjær is adamant Pogba will stay at United.

“I don’t listen to the president of Real Madrid,” Solskjær said. “I am not worried now and I will never be worried in the future about Paul staying here. If it all kicks off again in January, there will be no worries then either. If we have to live with the speculation again, then we will handle it like we did in the summer.

“Paul is going nowhere, he is working hard and is totally committed to Manchester United. He is one of our big characters, someone who will walk out on to any pitch and be full of confidence. That’s what I look for in a United player. You need a big personality to play for this club.”

Pogba has missed the last couple of United games through injury and may not recover in time to face West Ham on Sunday afternoon. Anthony Martial and Daniel James also face late checks for a fixture Manchester United lost 3-1 a year ago, at a time when Solskjær was still managing Molde in Norway, reports The Guardian.

“I think José [Mourinho] was struggling for fit centre-backs at the time,” he said. “I also remember that West Ham’s first goal was offside and that kind of thing can affect an outcome.

“I think people can see our improvement as a team since. We feel we are on the right track and, if we keep it up, I believe we will be challenging for the top four at the end of the season. It is wide open at the moment.”
