ational athletes that represented Nigeria at the 2019 All African Games in Rabat Morocco back in August showed they were still in fine form when the curtains came down on the just concluded 10th Korean Ambassador’s Cup, which held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos, Nigeria.

Seven of the national athletes, who chose the 10th Korean Ambassador Cup as their first tournament since the All African Games, included All African Games bronze medalists Uzoamaka Otuadinma and Benjamin Okuomose; All African Games quarter-finalists Peter Itiku, Abdulfathi Sanusi and Arinola Abdullateef. Sekinat Adebayo who was eliminated at the preliminary stage during the All African Games also entered for the Korean ambassador’s tournament.

On day one of the tournament, Abdulfathi Sanusi who was representing Q-Madi at the tournament clinched the gold in the male -58kg fly weight division when he defeated fellow national team mate, Arionola Abdullateef who was representing Lagos State.

Sekinat Adebayo, who represented Delta, had a brief redemption when she emphatically clinched the gold in the female -49kg after defeating Laady Iho of Nasarawa state.

All other national team players clinched their gold on day two, when Benjamin Okuomose of the Nigeria Army defeating FCT’s Kenneth Ogbu in the finals to continue the golden haul. Former African Champion, and 2019 African Bronze Medallist, Uzoamaka Otuadinma followed up with an impressive win over Adaeze Efobi who was representing an unaffiliated team.

Upcoming star, Peter Itiku, representing the FCT then closed the deal when he demolished Anambra’s Dandy Ogbonna in the finals after posting man-of-the-tournament performances during all his matches at the tournament.

The performances of former African Champion, Uzoamaka Otuadinma, and All African Games quarterfinalist, peter Itiku, earned them the highly coveted MVP awards, which came along with a brand new 21” TV flat screen at the 10th edition of the Korean Ambassador’s Cup and was presented by the Ambassador to Embassy of South Korea in Nigeria himself, Mr Lee In-Tae.

Other athletes that were the training partners at the All African Games also showed outstanding improvement in form as all of them won medals.

In the female -62kg lightweight, Alice Ikor representing the Nigeria Army won the gold medal. In the female +73kg heavyweight, Oyebanji Olapeju won the gold medal. In the female -67kg welter weight, Bukola Ogunnusi won the gold medal. In the male -68kg, Baffa won the gold medal after defeating other national team attendees, Kebbi’s Jamilu Danbaba in the finals and FCT’s Precious Benson in the semi-finals. FCT’s Daniel Inaju also came away with the bronze after losing to eventual winner, Abdulfathi Sanusi.

The results of all these athletes, who were at the All African Games national training camp, laid bare the quality of difference between the national athletes and the rest of the taekwondo population after exposure to high quality training and an international competitive experience.

The next national ranked tournament will be at Kebbi between 9 and 11 November 2019.

UEFA League roundup: Mbappé, Sterling score hat-trick in PSG, City routs

Kylian Mbappé came off the bench to grab a second half hat-trick and inspire Paris Saint-Germain to a runaway 5-0 victory at Belgium’s Club Brugge in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The win kept up their 100% record in Group A with the French team on nine points at the halfway mark and on the cusp of qualification for the next phase, a comfortable five points ahead of second placed Real Madrid, who won 1-0 against Galatasaray in Turkey.

Juventus forward Paulo Dybala scored twice in three minutes late in the game to give the Turin side a 2-1 win over Lokomotiv Moscowafter the Russians had taken a shock first-half lead, reports The Press Association.

Aleksei Miranchuk stunned the Juventus Stadium by putting the visitors ahead after half an hour of the Group D match despite the home side having 70% of possession in the first half.

Lokomotiv’s blanket defence frustrated the Serie A champions until Dybala equalised with an exquisite shot from outside the area in the 77th minute and the Argentine struck again three minutes later to complete a dramatic win.

In the other game in Group D Atlético Madrid substitute Álvaro Morata scored a late second half header to give his team a 1-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen.

Bayern Munich needed two goals from their top scorer Robert Lewandowski to sneak past hosts Olympiakos 3-2 on Tuesday and remain top of their Champions League.

The win lifted Bayern to nine point from three games. Tottenham crushed Red Star Belgrade 5-0 to move up to second place on four, one ahead of the Serbs.

And in Group C, Shakhtar Donetsk and Dinamo Zagreb played out a 2-2 draw, with Dodo’s 75th-minute equaliser.

And on a night of firsts for Manchester City, they could savour Raheem Sterling’s maiden Champions League hat-trick. If the only red card of Phil Foden’s career was a footnote, a superlative display by Sterling, who epitomises Pep Guardiola’s quest for perpetual, exponential improvement brought another milestone in his development. It was all the more remarkable as it came in 11 minutes and as he had already played a part in City’s first two goals. They scored five to give them a five-point lead in Group C. It was quite a turnaround after trailing to Atalanta. If Sergio Agüero’s double gave City a further reason to be relieved he escaped unhurt from a car crash last week, even he was overshadowed by Sterling.

Salah has not played since injuring his ankle in a 2-1 win over Leicester City in the Premier League earlier this month. The Egyptian missed the 1-1 draw at Manchester United over the weekend, which ended the Anfield side’s 17-match winning streak in the league, reports Reuters.

Dennis set to haunt PSG in Champions League

Dennis set to haunt PSG in Champions League

Super Eagles forward, Emmanuel Dennis, will be aiming to add Paris Saint Germain to the list of big teams he has scored against as Club Brugg welcome the French club in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League.

Dennis, who netted a brace in matchday 2 of the Europe competition against Real Madrid in their 2-2 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on October 1, will be hoping to re-enact the performance against PSG.

A win for the Belgian club against a PSG side that would be aiming for the maximum point could brighten their chances of qualifying from the group.

Indeed, Brugge are now 10 Champions League games unbeaten including those qualifiers, while in the competition proper you have to go back to matchday two last season for their last defeat – a run of six games.

Five of those games, including both so far this season, have ended all square, though, while stretching even further back Brugge have only won three of their last 20 outings in the Champions League proper.

Pascal: Eagles’ll be ruthless against Benin, Lesotho

Pascal: Eagles’ll be ruthless against Benin, Lesotho

Team Coordinator of the Super Eagles, Patrick Pascal, has said the Nigerian team will be ruthless when they face off with Benin and Lesotho in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers scheduled for November.

Pascal said nothing short of victory should be expected when the Super Eagles play Benin Republic and Lesotho.

It would be recalled that the draws for the 2021 AFCON paired Nigeria alongside Benin, Lesotho and Sierra Leone with the Super Eagles starting their campaign against Benin in November before taking on Lesotho few days later.

Speaking with New Telegraph, Pascal said that the players had learnt how to play against African opposition despite some of them not starting their career back home in Nigeria.

“Nothing short of victory against Benin and Lesotho in November,” he said.

“Football has changed to what it used to be. We have the likes of Alex Iwobi, Ola Aina and others who have never played back home in Nigeria but were at the last AFCON and did very well.

“They have learnt how to play against African oppositions; they have them as team mates and opponents too in their various clubs.

“Imagine, the average ages of these players are between 22 and 23, they are very young players. In the past, we don’t usually have such young players in the team, which is to tell you that we are making good progress.”

Meanwhile, the ex-international has said the team has endeared themselves to Nigerians and now people look forward to watching them.

He said the 1-1 draw against Brazil in a recent friendly game had boosted their confidence and  are ready to take on any opposition.

Pascal added: “This set of players in the team are hungry for success and now endeared themselves to hearts of Nigerians.

“All what they needed from us is support and encouragement.

“If you look at the main Super Eagles, people now have confidence watching the team and we have set of young players doing well for their various club sides.

CHAN: Bonfrere slams Imama’s ‘kick and rush’ tactics

Former Super Eagles coach Jo Bonfrere has knocked down the long-ball tactics Imama Amapakabo employed in a desperate bid to overturn a heavy loss against Togo and qualify for next year’s African Nations Championships in Cameroon.

The Home-based Eagles won 2-0 in Lagos at the weekend, but failed to overturn a 4-1 loss they had suffered in Togo last month.

This was despite the fact that 10 minutes of additional time were given by the match officials on Saturday.

“The long balls did not help the team because Togo had tall defenders to deal with them,” said Bonfrere, who was at the Agege Stadium to watch the game on Saturday.

They aimed these balls at the No 9 (Nyima Nwagua) but he couldn’t deal with them.

“They should have tried using the wings and crosses to go past the defence.”

CHAN Eagles coach Imama himself admitted “technical blunders” from the first leg with co-ordinator Patrick Pascal also saying the players who played in Lagos would have done a better job than those who were paraded in Lome.

Imama made as many as six changes to the starting XI from the Lome leg of the 2020 CHAN playoffs – Daniel James, Ifeanyi Nweke, Anthony Shimaga, Nyima Nwagua, Ibrahim Olawoyin and Ifeanyi Anaemena.

Last year, Nigeria played in the final of the CHAN in Morocco.
