Day ghosts came in pair

Day ghosts came in pair

Chief clears his throat, looks around him, then at the three men and a woman and clears his throat again.

Sam is getting irritably impatient. He feels like rushing to Chief and forcing the words out of his mouth. He looks around him and notices that no one is as eager as he is to hear what Chief has to say. Obviously, he’s the only person that’s in the dark. He turns to Kim and notices a glow in her eyes. Tears?

“Fate has a way of fiddling with our lives. It swings us back and forth, throwing joy and pain at us at whim. One moment you are happy, the next, you are in pain. One moment you are crying, the next you are laughing.

Years ago, I found myself crying. I cried and cried, before then, I had laughed but at times, the laughter was painful, painful because I was not allowed to live my life the way I wanted. My parents wanted to live my life for me. I made up my mind that my children would make their choices. I made up my mind that I would allow them make their mistakes,” Chief said.

He looks at his listeners. If looks could kill, Sam’s eyes would have dismembered Chief.

Suddenly, Chief stares at Sam intently and continues.

“The first day you stepped through that door, I knew something would change. The shock almost killed me. I thought I saw an apparition. You look so much like your father. But the ghost of that day came in a pair. I felt I was caught in a whirlwind. I thought I was having another issue with my heart. I thought I’d die. I prayed to God to preserve my life. Later, during my stay in the hospital, I thought about it all and made some discreet enquiries which led to more revelations.”

Chief looks around him again.

“Get me a glass of something strong,” he said to Val.

“No Chief. You need water, not alcohol. Get him water, please,” Dr. Jones said firmly.

“Doctor, an old man should know what’s good for him…but I give up. Will make do with the water. I’ll live my life the way I want once you step out of that door,” Chief said with a smile as he accepts a glass of water from Val.

He stares at Kim and she squirms in her seat. He looks up and down and rests his eyes on Sam again. By now, Sam is feeling hot and cold at the same time. Suddenly, he starts sweating in the air-conditioned living room.

“What an old man sees while sitting down, a young man will not see even if he climbs the tallest tree…” Chief said.

“Excuse me sir, I want to use the gents,” Sam said, standing up. He heads to the gents.

He fiddles with his fly as the urgency intensifies immediately he closes the door behind him. After peeing, he flushes and zips up carefully. As he washes his hands, his brow creases.

He leans against the door and wipes the sweat off his brow with his palm. The manner in which Val wraps his eyes endearingly around Kim unsettles him.

Could there be something between them? Could there be a discreet affair between them? Kim is intoxicated by wealth. She’s always telling him that it was a mistake she was born into a poor home. She told him that she usually had dreams of rich parentage when she was much younger. She egged him on to accept anything Chief offered them. It is a chance at improving their lot in life.

What if he has to leave the job suddenly? What if whatever Chief has to say makes him take a drastic decision there and then? Can he turn his back on the new job and all the goodies that comes with it? Will Kim accept him if he has to lose everything now? To think that he sold his personal vehicle just 48 hours ago! Kim had harassed him into selling the car.

“How do you feel when you park this wretched looking car beside this machine? Don’t you think that since our level has changed, everything should change with it?” Kim had gone on and on.

He had no choice. He had to sell his much loved Toyota Camry ‘Tiny light’.

Now, if he leaves Chief’s house without his official vehicle, he is ‘carless’ and he can bet with his mother’s head that Kim will not leave with him.

Kim! Kim and Val! He is yet to understand the affinity between them…

“Sam…Sam…Sam!!! Are you okay? You’ve been in there for rather too long.” It’s Val.

“Er…em…yeah…yes…I’m coming out now,” he replied, flushing the loo again and turning the tap off and on.

“Okay, dad said I should check on you,” Val said, his voice fading.

As Sam opens the door and steps into the living room, he panics again.

“A man dies only once,”he told himself and strides purposefully to the couch he left about 10 minutes earlier.

Chief looks him up and down.

“Young man, you have to pull yourself together. When I lost my first love, Val’s mother, I was devastated. I thought I was going to die. I took to drinking. At a point, I left for Bulgaria. I had a friend schooling in Sofia then and I just wanted to relax. I couldn’t cope with the weather, the cold was extreme. I took to alcohol like fish takes to water. After six months of being a layabout, I realised that my son needed me. I returned home. The young lady my parents got for me even before I finished school had moved into our house then. My parents got her to care for my son, Val. It was so easy to fall for her whims. She prepared and served my meals. I was still drinking. Most nights, my head was in the cloud. I didn’t know when I started going in to her. She got pregnant and my parents were ecstatic. It was a big wedding but I didn’t remember what transpired that day. I was drunk most of the day. My parents converted your father, Sam, to my personal driver.”

Sam’s head bobs. The others sit up in surprise. Clearly this is news to them all.

“Well, I lived with my wife in relative peace until we ran into an old neighbour of Val’s mother, Elsie. We’d stop by a stall to buy some fruits and vegetables.

“Immediately Elsie saw my pregnant wife, she screamed at me, ‘So, you sent this woman to come and kill the pregnant mother of your son so you could marry her, eh?’

“Your father had come down from the vehicle to open the car booth. On seeing him, Elsie shouted in astonishment, ‘Daniel!!!’

The effect of Chief’s word is electric. His audience literally jump from their seats, shocked.

“Dad, was my mum murdered?” Val asked, fear mixed with something indescribable in his voice.

Djinn’s Day Out (3)

Djinn’s Day Out (3)

Ho b b l i n g round the room with injuries on his conscience, Dave couldn’t think straight. He sat on the edge of the bed in his birthday suit. His mind had been in chaos since his wife left the hotel room. He was oblivious of the persistent knocking on the door and didn’t look up when the door opened and Dom walked in.

Dom was taken aback as he beheld the unclad man hunched over on the bed. “Boss,” he called out quietly, closing the door behind him. There was no response from Dave. “Boss! Boss!” He said, louder, as he moved towards him. Dave looked up and turned his gaze on him. After a few seconds, he said, “Don’t panic.

I’m okay. I’ll be fine. Just close the door after you”. Dom hesitated. It would be disrespectful to insist on knowing what went wrong. But then, he procured the cargo that just left, who obviously was the cause of his client’s distress, so, he had the right to ask. “Boss, I’m sorry, but…” “Please, please, please leave. I want to be alone for now,” Dave said. “Okay boss, for now,” Dom said, heading for the door. When he got downstairs, he went to an unoccupied part of the pool area and sat down.

He needed to make an important call and didn’t want to be overheard. He dialed a number and it rang out four times. He waited for a while and dialed the number again. Just as he was about to give up, she answered. “Hello, I don’t want to talk about anything. Believe whatever he tells you. Please, I’ll appreciate it if you don’t call me again.

Thank you,” she said and ended the call. Now, Dom was not only worried, he was confused. Why wouldn’t they want to talk? What could have transpired between the two people within the short period of time the lady was up there? He was sure of one thing though, they weren’t strangers to each other. If they weren’t acquaintances, they would want to talk. He settled down more comfortably in the pool chair and waited. He had a clear view of the porch of the main building. He would know when the boss would be leaving. Funny enough, he saved Dave’s name as ‘Boss’ in his phone.

He didn’t know jack about him, only that he was a man of means. He knew the lady simply as Doris. He didn’t know which part of town she lived in. Well, he would have to be more carefull if he didn’t want to get into trouble in his line of business. What if someone had died in there?

He quickly shook his head to clear the morbid thought. He resolved that henceforth, he would pay closer attention to the identity of his clients.

Back in the hotel room, Dave lay reclined on the bed. He couldn’t just understand why his wife of less than two years would be involved in such a shameful act. Yes, he usually told her only bitch behaviour could satisfy him behind closed doors, but did he tell her to go learn how to be a bitch? No, he replied himself. “No?” His conscience asked him.

He wasn’t too sure, for he remembered his wife asking him if that was the only thing that would make him happy, and him saying ‘yes’ in the throes of passion. He wondered how he would face his wife at home. What would they say to each other? How would they look each other in the eyes and go to bed together?

He spat the bile that had risen up his throat. This should be the result of heeding his old aunt’s advice and going for the wife of her choice! She had advised him to take stock of his life after his second marriage ended less than three years after being contracted. At 48, he had no child. Not from his first wife and not from the second one. His first wife was a living example of the word, thorn. Trouble was her second name. It was a wonder they lived together for four years.

She was so meddlesome and gave him no breathing space. Looking back now, he should have kept her, but for the insistence of his elder sister, who couldn’t stand her. She had her good side though. Thinking back, she had brought good fortune to his life.

His business thrived, but she had no child for him. When they divorced and he got married to his second wife, his fortune took a nosedive. Things became very tough at a time. The hitherto docile lady became quarrelsome. She blamed him for her inability to have a child. After three years of seeking both medical and spiritual help, she packed her things and moved out of his house. All entreaties to have her return to her matrimonial home failed. After four months, she jetted out of the country, to the United States. In anger, his old aunt brought Ujay to his house to ‘help put his house in order’.

Ujay wasn’t his kind of woman but she was homely. After ten days of living in his house, he started noticing her as a woman. One night, after dinner, he invited her to sit with him in the sitting room and share a bottle of wine while watching the television. She obliged him after cleaning the kitchen. After a glass of wine, which he encouraged her to down in mouthfuls, she became uncoordinated. He made her drain a second glass. Before she’d finished it, she was in her birthday suit, courtesy of Dave.

He had her several times before dawn. She was disoriented in the morning. He nursed her throughout the day and helped himself to her until he was exhausted. That was how their marriage began. However, he had shied away from doing the traditional ‘needful’ to make their ‘marriage’ legal. Ujay didn’t know that Dave’s family was waiting for her to become pregnant before she would be legally installed in Dave’s house. It was a perfect plan!

Anytime she complained to Dave’s aunt, she would advise her to ‘have patience’. She’d been having patience for almost two years now. Dave shook his head to clear his thoughts. He wondered where Ujay was at that moment and what could be going through her mind. This was his third marriage… and without a child to show for it, both inside and outside his home! Was he on his way to the fourth? He clutched his head with his hands. Just at that moment, a message came into his phone. It was a video. He clicked on it and as he watched it, his jaw dropped, his pupils dilated and his right hand flew to his chest…

Ujay could hardly see as she walked awkwardly from the cab to where she parked her car in the mall. Immediately she opened the door of her car, she collapsed into it, sobbing. When she noticed that people were staring at her, she sat down properly in the car, turned on the ignition and air conditioner. She knew it was over between her and Dave. It was the shame of her action that weighed her down.

How would she tell people what she did? She shuddered. She’d rather die than open her mouth to say it. Let Dave be the one to talk about it! She remembered the video she inadvertently took in the hotel room. She brought out her phone and watched it. After watching it the third time, she highlighted it, scrolled down her phone contacts, and sent it to one. Her face set, she engaged the gear, and drove slowly out of the parking lot.

Jada Dubai’s record-setting shoes, which were designed in coordination with Dubai-based Passion Jewellers, took nearly nine months to create.

“Jada Dubai designs only shoes with diamonds,” said the company’s co-founder, Maria Majari. “For the launch of our second collection, we wanted to create a piece that is truly unique in the world using very rare diamonds.”

While the prototype shoes are shown in size 5.5, those who place an order will receive a custom pair in the requested size.

Nigerian female celebrities who will never date or marry poor men

Nigerian female celebrities who will never date or marry poor men

Over the years in the film industry, celebrities rank top, when it comes to failed marriages. The process of finding the right partner is almost as difficult as making heaven for some of them. That is why these celebrities decided to make their own rules on the choice of the man they want to date or get married to. So we bring to you Nigerian female celebrities who have vowed never to have something to do with poor men. VANESSA OKWARA reports

Toyin Lawani

Gorgeous, fashion stylist and entrepreneur, Toyin Lawani is the CEO and creative director of Tiannah’s Place Empire and also the founder of the Fashion Academy, Tiannah’s Styling Fashion Academy in Nigeria.

The daring and beautiful mother of two, who initially don’t really care about the age and financial status of a man, recently got people talking after she reveals that before any man can approach her for a relationship, such a man must first pay her the sum of 2million naira, either by cash or by transfer.

Admirers can now note what to expect as Toyin has clearly stated what her expectations are in a relationship and in a possible partner.

Lizzy Anjorin]

Controversial Yoruba actress, Liz Anjorin has expressed her phobia for poor men. The light in complexion business woman cum real estate executive said the attitude of a man is essential, the weight of his pocket, is something that calls for concern. “I will not lie. I cannot marry a poor man. Please, it will not happen. What a man has in his bank account doesn’t always determine if he is rich or not. But his attitude also matters. The guy has to be trustworthy. He too has to trust me as his wife.” She once told a reporter in Lagos.

Empress Njamah

Empress Njamah who recently celebrated her 40th birthday is a talented and successful actress in Nollywood. The realistic actress is never ashamed to let those that care to listen that she doesn’t give a damn about broke guys.

In one of her interviews, she was quoted as “I’m not going to tell you what I want. But you get into an expensive shop to pick up something because you can afford it. You see something you can afford, and then you buy it but if you cannot afford it, take a walk.

The goods are for someone that can afford it, that’s the best I can tell you. I will not settle for less, my sister and that’s the truth. People come and tell you all sort of lies and want to praise themselves and say “I can marry a poor man” I am a real person, we all have been through rough times, we all have paid our dues one way or the other. So no poor man must get close to me. Those who know the worth pay the dues.”

Iyabo Ojo

Iyabo Ojo, while explaining why she will never marry a poor man, made it very clear that, there is no love without money. She went further to say she is not ready to die in poverty, as poor men are liability.

Hear her, “there is no love without money. I am a celebrity and I am expected to maintain a certain lifestyle, which is expensive.” “I have a lot of responsibilities. As a breadwinner and celebrity, how do you expect me to marry a poor man? Where do you expect us to start from?

“I am not ready to add any man’s problems to mine. I don’t need the man to be very rich, but he must be able to feed himself and me. You don’t even have to cater for my other responsibilities.

“We all have our defects. When you keep looking for an ideal man, a good one will pass you by. I just need a man who is responsible for himself first before me. Once he is hungry for success, every other thing will follow.

“The kind of man I want in my life has to be more successful than me. When I bought my personal assistant a car, people said I didn’t want her to marry. I told them that I don’t expect her to marry someone who does not have a car as well.

You say what you want out of life; we shouldn’t deceive ourselves. It is a choice to die in poverty and I have chosen not to die in poverty. I cannot flow with someone who wants to die in poverty.” Iyabo declares.

Bukky Wright

Famous Nigerian actress, Bukky Wright, who’s marital life has been a subject of controversy, is a strong woman who has able to pick up from negative situations and move on. Few years ago, the 47 year old ageless, beautiful and established actress gave a little insight on the kind of men that she doesn’t hesitate to give a chance in her life. According to her, rich men turn her on, while poor men turn her off. “I don’t like deceitful, uncaring and broke men. I could die for a very caring and rich man. I’m a very romantic person so I love romantic men; I love surprise gifts. As a young girl growing up I read a lot of Mills & Boom. I like my man to surprise me with gifts; it sweeps me off my feet. I don’t like men that wait for you to ask before they give. I like men that are in control and know what to do. But I notice that with most men, if you don’t ask you don’t get.” She said.

Linda Ikeji

The successful blogger admitted in an interview that she would not consider marrying someone who is not wealthy. Celebrity blogger, Linda Ikeji is not the bit reserved when it comes to her taste in men, after stating that they can be anything but poor.

The blogger disclosed that she has been getting quite a lot of marriage proposals, but only wants a man she can look up to. She was cocky when she mentioned that she can get married at any instant if she wills.

Getting a husband has never been a problem according to her. “I keep telling people. It’s not that men are scarce. They are not scarce. The type of men that some of us are looking for are scarce. “If I want to get married next week, I can. I want a man that I can look up to. Somebody that inspires me, somebody that will push me, motivate me; somebody who has had some success in his own career.

“I’m inspired by successful people. I can’t wait to meet someone like Tyler Perry.” Linda Ikeji’s successful career as a blogger hasn’t been without controversies.
