Impeachment: Trump charged with abuse of power

Impeachment: Trump charged with abuse of power

Donnald Trump has been charged with two articles of impeachment that could see him ousted from office over claims he abused his power and obstructed Congress.

Democrat Chair of the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee Jerry Nadler revealed the articles – akin to charges – in Washington DC Tuesday.

And House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff said Trump had committed ‘high crimes and misdemeanors.’

Nadler claimed that the president had imperiled US national security by trying to get Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate political rival Joe Biden’s son in return for a White House invite, as well as $400m in military aid.

The obstruction of Congress charge centers around claims that Trump tried to frustrate the investigation into his alleged abuse of power during his communications with Zelensky.

Nadler accused Trump of putting himself ‘consistently above country’. He said there is a ‘clear remedy for presidents who so violate their oath of office – that is impeachment.’

Schiff then explained the Democrats’ reasoning behind the articles, saying that President Trump ‘abused the power of his office to get a foreign power to help his reelection.’

He further attacked Trump’s alleged ‘willingness to sacrifice US national security for his own interests.’

He added: ‘No one is above the law: not even the President of the United States.’ Wheelchair user, 62, struck and killed by hit and run driver Trump is only the fourth president in US history to face impeachment.

The articles unveiled today will now be voted on by members of the lower house of the US Congress, the House of Representatives.

Joshua reclaims heavyweight titles, beats Ruiz Jr

Anthony Joshua became a two-time word heavyweight champion by exacting revenge over Andy Ruiz Jr in dominant fashion with a unanimous points victory in a tense rematch in Saudi Arabia.

Six months on from the night where Ruiz stunned boxing, Joshua risked his career being left in tatters with a second defeat but served up 36 minutes of movement and well-timed punching to take the IBF, WBA and WBO titles back to Britain, reports the BBC.

After cutting his Mexican rival inside the first round he simply never looked back and picked out smart jabs and right hands throughout before being serenaded with chants of “AJ, AJ, AJ” by the 14,000 or so fans in the largely full Diriyah Arena.

Ruiz never looked close to landing a knockdown and when scores of 118-110 118-110 and 119-109 were read out, Joshua jumped up and down in the ring in celebration, just as the man who had wrecked his US debut did in June.

JUST IN: Titi Ajanaku, ex-presidential adviser, dies at 73

Kunle Olayeni, Abeokuta

Chief (Mrs) Titilayo Ajanaku, former Special Adviser on Women Affairs to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, is dead.

Ajanaku, a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), died in the early hours of Thursday at the age of 73.

Though details of her death were still sketchy as at press time, ‘New Telegraph’ learnt that the foremost female politician succumbed to death after having battled with cancer for years.

Until her death, the late Ajanaku was the Otun Iyalode of Egbaland.

She was the chairman of old Abeokuta Local Government in Ogun State and, indeed, the first woman to be elected as a local government chairman in Nigeria.

A trained nurse, administrator and women leader, Ajanaku was born on January 25, 1946 at Ago-Odo Quarters in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

She attended Nawair-Ud-Deen Secondary School, Abeokuta and trained in Nursing at Stobhill General Hospital, Nether-Edge City General Hospital, Sheffield, United Kingdom between 1964 and 1965.

Ajanaku was member of the National Association of Nurses and Midwives of Nigeria.

She came into national limelight when she emerged against all odds as chairman of old Abeokuta Local Government under the zero-party arrangement. She defeated about 10 men lined up as candidates in that election.

Ajanaku was in the vanguard of G-34 which metamorphosed into the PDP in 1998.

She was also one of the top politicians arrested and arraigned in 1995 over phantom coup before the Patrick Aziza-led military panel.

In 2015, Ajanaku dumped the PDP and joined the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) ahead of that year’s election.
