2023 presidency: ‘Tinubu should support Ndigbo

…as mark of statesmanship

The pan-Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, yesterday urged the former Lagos State Governor and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to support Ndigbo in her quest to realise the 2023 presidency.

The group noted that should Tinubu adhere to this adverse, it would not only stand him out as a mark of statesmanship, but also distinguish him.

Speaking against the backdrop of the rumoured intention of Tinubu to contest the 2023 presidency, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, in an open letter made available to journalists in Enugu yesterday, through the national publicity secretary, Chief Alex Ogbonnia, said Tinubu’s quest to contest the presidency, though his constitutional right, would go against the grain of power rotation, and will likely affect the stability, trust and brotherhood of the southern Nigeria.

The group said the con-  test would also be a direct assault on the spirit of equity, fairness and justice, as it would amount to shortchanging the people of South East who are yet to have a chance to occupy the presidency of the country, especially since the inception of the current political dispensation.

The apex Igbo group showered encomiums on Tinubu for his enormous contributions to strengthening democracy in the country and building political bridges across the country.

Ohanaeze said it was convinced that Tinubu, in his typical manner of fighting for equity and justice, should be in the vanguard for a Nigerian president from the South East, come 2023, as a true statesman.

He said: “Curiously, one is worried that this huge social capital and the profiling of Tinubu as the conscience of Nigeria may suffer an irreversible damage if the indications coming from various sources are  anything to go by.

“This strong indication is centered on Tinubu’s intention to contest the presidency of Nigeria in 2023. I am persuaded that such ambition will be ill-advised and would amount to the demystification of the cultfollowership, which the Jagaban has built around himself.

The reason for the foregoing assertion is both philosophical and empirical. “Your Excellency had, in the years before now, played the avant-garde role of championing the rule of law, justice, equity and fairness in the governance structure of Nigeria.

But in the present circumstance, it appears that because of your ambition to contest for the presidency, the Bola Ahmed Tinubu we know has succumbed to the allure of power.

“Your strong ambition for presidency is no longer in doubt and on a daily basis is further accentuated by the activities of your close associates.”
