Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has said that no fewer than 346 women on HIV drugs died in the state at the end of 2020 representing 60% of HIV mortality. Fintiri who made the disclosure during the HIV/ AIDS day in Yola said, presently, the spread of the disease has been curtailed by 93 percent in the state. He further disclosed that, out of the 4,693 people diagnosed with HIV in Adamawa State in 2020, 64% (i.e. 3,014) were females. While thanking international partners and other stakeholders for tackling the disease head on, Fintiri added that his administration is bridging the inequality in access to service delivery.

According to the governor, “it is morally wrong that some people can get treatment and live long lives while others have no access to health care and die. “It is no news that my administration has taken concrete and deliberate steps to expand equitable access to quality healthcare in Adamawa State. By doing so, we are bridging geographical and demographic barrier to universal access to health.” Speaking earlier, the Executive Secretary, Ad-amawa State Agency for the Control of AIDS (ADSACA), Dr. Mohammed Chubado Abubakar said the rate of HIV/AIDS infection in the state has drastically reduced from 7.6 percent previously to 0.8 percent presently. “In 2003 our prevalence rate was 7.6 percent, but now we have 0.8 percent for men and 1.4 percent for women, even as the infection rate among pregnant women for 2019 has also reduced to 0.1 percent, as every 1000 women tests only get 1 positive,” he said. Abubakar who expressed optimism that the ailment will be completely eradicated by 2030 in the state said the introduction of a new potent drug known as “Post Exposure Prophylaxis” (PEP) coupled with the serious intervention of his agency in collaboration with international partners has paid the desired premium.
